Which is original?

#1

Post by motobuffy »

Recently bought a 2nd 1200 standard. The headlight buckets are different on each bike. One is marked HM 48 M and the other is HM 27 MS. I suspect the 27 MS is the factory original, based on the fact that the 48 M needs spacers to mount, but would like confirmation. I guess its possible Honda decided to use a substitute late in the run if availability of the "standard" part became an issue. Thanks for checking your bikes

Since the 1200 standard was only built one year, I suspect they sometimes used headlights, and other parts, from the 1100 and possibly from the 900/1000 CBs.

I'll check mine tomorrow morning and let you know. I'm nearly 100% certain my bucket's original. It includes the 3 or 4 rubber coated wire holders in the interior to hide the (stupidly large amount of) wiring the 1200 comes with, and something like this seems like it would be a "1200S only" part.

HM-28M-S is correct which is the same code as a 75-77 shell.

The S shell has a 1" wider hole in the back and 4 straps inside.

I put one of the 27M chrome buckets on my '78. It was supposedly from a '76 GL1000. For some crazy reason, Honda decided to put black plastic buckets on the '78/79's (and some early 1100's too I think). At least the 1200 Standard came with a chrome bucket. I absolutely refused to put a black plastic bucket back on mine when I was going through it a few years back. (At the time, it had a Vetter headlight that went along with all the other Vetterizing it had carried around for a few decades).
