Photobucket third party hosting

#1

Post by leggman »

When someone posts a photo from photobucket I can't see it. all I can see is a generic message telling me to enable third party hosting? or something like that. How do I fix this? Thanks

It's not you..
Some of us have been using PB for years and then they pulled their stunt of not allowing 3rd party hosting.
Some photos will never come back. I've tried to rebuild using Imgur https://imgur.com/ for old post where needed. It's best to use the clubs photo hosting going forward.

I wrote Photobucket support a harshly worded (yet professional) tongue lashing email about this a week ago.

I asked them if they had any idea at all of the damage they had done to the thousands and thousands of posted "how to" procedures with pictures that people have posted for years and years on this site and thousands of other information sharing sites like it. (I know... they don't care, but sending it made me feel better)

I'll be curious to see if I even get an answer from them, and if so, what kind of spin job they'll try to put on it.

Need a lawsuit to get their attention. They really have knowingly duped people for many years by letting them think it’s okay. Greed took over.

It’s so many sites across the world of free invaluable information that people have willingly shared to help others, all for naught because of the greed of a few.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

THERE'S A FIX ! ! ! action1

The browser developers have come up with a fix for the Photobucket hot link "problem".

They have developed add-ins that allow the hot linked photos to display again! Good for them!

Here's a link to the Firefox fix:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ucket-fix/

Here's the Chrome fix: If you're using chrome, click on the three dots, go to "More Tools" then "Extensions". At the bottom click on "Get more extensions". Then search for "Photobucket Hotlink Fix" and install it.

Other browser developers have fixes as well.

I applied the add-in to my Firefox installation and I can see all of the hot linked Photobucket pictures now.

(Wonder how long it will take for Photobucket to see this and find a way to break the links again?)

Photobucket Update......
They have changed their rate (I'm not going to post it)
In short, they are falling on the sword harder than the wizards of New Coke.

Will I switch back?

The page that link takes you to says "This add-on has been disabled by an administrator."

The Photobucket Fixer extension (created by a member of cx500forum.com) is still available and still works perfectly
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... r/?src=api

BTW: In a way we brought this on ourselves. Yes, Photobucket originally promised us a way to host pics for free but they always intended to make a profit from providing that service by selling advertising on their site. After a while they became greedier and their advertisers demanded more resource hogging ads (there is no way that a simple non-animated image needs to be a Flash object), which ended up with the ads taking so long to load that their site was virtually crippled for anyone with less than the latest (biggest/bestest/fastest) computers and web service so' in order to continue using it many of us installed ad blockers. Ad blockers mean less return for the advertising dollar, which means advertisers are willing to pay less so in order to continue to have enough income to pay shareholder dividends and the costs of servers &c PB started looking at the only other possible source of income: the people that use their service.

If they had just kept the ads to a reasonable level as they were in the beginning none of this would have happened.

On Saturday I received an email from them stating that they have a new management team (maybe the old team was fired for making such a huge error in judgement?) and they want to earn back our trust. They restored all my photos that were third party hosted and hope that I'll give them another chance. Their new monthly rate (discounted if you pay for a year in advance) is very reasonable and 95% less than it was a few days ago. It includes third party hosting, 10gigs of space, and no ads.

Businesses expect to make a profit and I would have gladly paid their new rate if that's what they rolled out months ago when they alienated pretty much anyone using their service. That move was disastrous and I'm sure that they're feeling it now. Will I go back to them? No, too little, too late - I'll stick with Dropbox. Not only do businesses need to make a profit to remain viable, they have to make smart marketing decisions. They blew it and I agree that they can get (or stay) bent. I wouldn't have put it that nicely.
