The Jalopy: '78-79 Mash-up.

I did find it eventually, lol. This completes the brake component disassembly except for the '79 rear master and caliper, which is the same as the '78, from what I can see. I think I'm going to clean up and rebuild the '78 parts, as the bike will be registered as a '78. I'll also save some cash because the '79 front master cylinder cup is junk, so I'd have to replace it.

The '78 forks. Someone tried a cleanup of the lowers at some point. More character! And, yes, they bought a couple of cheap gaiters instead of the much more expensive dust caps...

Pretty obvious that the seals have been replaced, and despite not having the dust caps, there isn't too much crud in there. I haven't looked closely at the '79 forks yet, as it's still tucked away in the shed, but I'll clean these up a bit first, drain the fluid, and see what that looks like. Buying a couple dust caps, replacing the fluid, bolt on and go does beat making the effort to make the tool and replace the seals. If I feel the need to revisit the forks later, so be it. Time to do some reading up on the 1000 forks!

So did I! Too many irons in the fire (and not all of my choosing), I guess. I have been literally picking away at the rusty parts of the frame in my spare time, and I'm just about ready for rust killer and touch-up. Don't want to make it too nice, it is 'The Jalopy' after all, and blasting and powder coat isn't in the budget.
I have also been collecting parts as good deals come up here and there, including a new-in-the-box complete Dyna ignition, and a better set of carbs. Right now the debate raging in my head is how much more stuff do I bring into the basement for the winter... my stepson has decided he wants a Wing, so (hopefully) we'll be restarting the 'Quickie' project together over the winter as well.

Yes powder coating is pretty expensive. I've had good luck using Rustoleum "Farm & Implement" spray paint. It's pretty durable and a nice finish... nice enough for a "jalopy". Valspar also makes good "tractor" paint, I've been told.

I picked up the Rustoleum, but not the spray can. As I'm working in my basement, i need to be careful of fumes, overspray, etc. It lays down pretty well, and the brush strokes will add some character, lol!

About brush strokes, I used foam brushes with great results, no marks. Just a thought

Rustolium dries slow, so it is difficult to save the brush strokes. Best to leave the lid off and dry out the paint to preserve brush strokes. Else they all disappear.

December 26th. A friend and I headed out for the 'middle of everywhere,' Chicago, to pick up the '79. A few hours and several toll booths later, my truck had a new to me bike adorning the bed... It was a very pleasant visit, and I was quite happy with the condition of the bike. Thank you very much warhead_71!

Leggman, I usually don't kiss and tell... 3 Bens with some spare parts, etc. Once I have a solid base to work with and a better idea of what I'll be using from each bike, a lot of the extras will come up for sale here, as much to get them out of my limited work space as anything.

Three of the floats are like the first one pictured above, and the fourth is pictured second. Which one is original? The three that are the same look newer than the fourth.

While the slides and caps look good, all of the needles have some serious grooves in them, all at about the same location. Anyone seen this before? I'm assuming I'll need to replace them...

At least whoever was into these before made removing the bowl screws easy. Notice the slots cut into the heads? A few of the threads are slightly buggered up, but I think I'll be able run a tap through them and clean them up.

The caps look weather checked, but not cracked through, as far as I can tell. Am I safe in assuming that they're good? Is there a way to test them?

So it sounds like I'll be 'mashing up' carbs too?!? I have three sets, all different numbers. Tried the search to ID them, but several hundred hits... Any hints? 769A, 771A, 758A
