any trade secrets on removing the old one?
1982 1100 standard. (sold)
1986 Yamaha FJ1200
2000 Yamaha Roadstar

Yep, easy as taking off the shifter, take a wood screw or drywall screw and screw it into the seal. Pull on screw with pliers, and pop out.

New seal coat with oil, and push on with fingers. Can take a socket and hammer and lightly tap it home. Reinstall shifter in same spot, and you are done.

tks guys..
screwing a wood screw into the seal isn't something I would have though of..

Or a drywall screw .... a little tape on the splines will protect the new seal as you slide it on ....

or I could leave the several inches of oil and road crap on the splines. lol
