Comstar wheel Conversion

#1

Post by Olyclo »

Good Morning :-)

I posted before about changing wheels on my 77 gl1000. I bought it as a barn find and it had a rear comstar and a front lester! I want to fit a front comstar ( I know it’s not straight forward ) my question is would the following wheel fit as it’s cheap and comes with discs :-

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2210575566

Thanks for any help! Other option is to find a rear lester but in Ireland parts are few and far between! I see cheap 16” lesters but would want something bigger.

Thanks in advance :-)

Don't know about the 759 wheel. Easier solution IMHO would be to source a '78 or '79 GL1000 front end and wheel. '75 - '77 had the speedo drive on the right side, while '78 and '79 had them on the left. Brakes were different too.

I think you'd be better served getting a 16" Lester and working with the slightly higher cruising rpm and 1/2" lower ride height, but if you really want a comstar I have everything you need. Pm me if interested and we can work something out. I also have a NOS 16" Lester rear if you decide to go that route.

Man, reading this made me paranoid. I just put some Comstar on my 1977 GL1000. I am not sure what year the other bike I got them from, but they bolted right up. Did not have to change anything. However, the speedo supposed to be on the left, and I managed to leave it on the right by putting the tire the other direction. It's pointing up instead of down. Did not notice anything weird or anything touching/grinding or off balance.
Now reading Whiskerfish link, how do I know if it's right or wrong what I did? I really don't wanna replace the front end.

if it works, don't sweat it. I am assuming you also got rotors with the comstar

Yes, rotor came with comstar. But now that I am thinking about it, I did not check if the speedometer is working.
Since it's supposed to be on the left and I put it on the right it might be turning the other way which means it always reads 0 mph. I will look into when I get a chance. :IDTS:

The critical thing is the caliper offset. The 75-77 calipers had a different offset and mounting system to the forks that does not match up with the 78/79 comstars. To do this mod most swap the entire front end

It pays to read other's threads. Lesson learned
So, after I put the camstars I took the bike for a spin. I didn't notice anything wrong. But after I read about the caliper offsets, I checked my calipers, and guess what? I am changing the front end.
The rotor chewed up one caliper. Not that bad, but just some damage.I am glad I read this thread.

I have a NOS rear Lester rim if you want to match the front.

Yeah, I would think the wheel would have been hard to turn as soon as it was installed.
