Runs Terrible...then improves a bit.

Riding a '79 GL 1000. Rebuilt carbs, electronic ignition, new coils, and all the other "tune up stuff" that the old bike needed.

It was running perfectly last fall - a lot of fun. This spring I took it out for the first time and I just couldn't get anything out of it. When the engine had just started to warm-up I could maybe get 50 mph out of it but I had to rev like crazy to get there. It kept surging.

As the bike warmed up I could get more power out of it and the surging stopped. But, even when cruising at 70 mph it still "missed" frequently.

I've got a long list of "could be" items but I thought I'd ask for your advice about what to put at the top of the list. Don't want to go tearing something apart if someone else has had the same problem and knows how to fix it.
1979 GL 1000 - It's not a mid-life crisis if you enjoy working on your bike as much as riding your bike.

Old gas? Did you drain the carbs before you stored it? Put anything in the fuel before you stored it?
