Need suggestion on this

Post by agopalpuria »

I have found a local who is selling the below wing. Can you guys please go through the post and let me know what you think about it?
Quoted from the actual sale post

1981 Honda GL1100
condition: good
engine displacement (CC): 1084
fuel: gas
odometer: 43000
paint color: silver
title status: clean
transmission: manual

Selling my 1981 GL 1100. Naked and made to look like a cafe racer. Purchased the bike three months ago from a guy who dropped the price from 2000 to 1000, essentially giving me a good deal. Bike ran strong for a month and a half, and in the last few weeks it's been having a lot of issues with the starting system. It's visited 2 guys garage four times in the last 5 weeks. They can't seem to figure out the issue. This bike is clearly one step away from being a mechanically sound and strong running like.

I'm tapped out, I don't have anymore money to put into it & as hard as it is to get rid of, I have to. Recently installed a brand new battery, bike has a brand new starter on it warrantied from Rick's at two guys garage. New clutch cable. It's a blast to ride when it's running, it's frustrating when it's not. If you ride a bike then you know the struggle. This bike has a lot of life left in it. You solve the problem with the starting issue, and you'll have yourself a great running bike as long as you take care of it.

Thanks for looking,

Please describe the starting issues.
If the starter doesn't spin at all, it electrical and will be an easy fix.
If the starter spins but doesn't engage the engine, you are going to be pulling the engine and repairing the starter sprag.

I have 2 questions
1. How much is the seller looking for the bike. The advert states he bought it for $1000, what is he looking?
2.What are the starting issues exactly? Does it crank and not fire or does it not crank at all?

I went down and looked at this bike yesterday. Fifteen minutes away. Two things: 1) Brand new starter in it and it still just spins. (Not the starter clutch spin, just a starter and nothing else kind of spin). Sure looks like the engine needs to come out to investigate. The other starter is sitting on the shelf and is probably good.
2) There's no title. Apparently there was one, but it's now lost...?

He's pretty firm on his price even without the title. The photos are kind to the machine. There are some definite cosmetic issues. Minor, but they add up. Motor paint is a mess. That's kind of a big deal for a flip. (Oops, did I say flip?) I walked.

No mention of what he wants for it, (or I missed it). It's a $500 chance,...at best. Now running, with a title, that's a different story

He's looking for $800. Pretty firm. Could probably be squeezed a bit, but not much. Like I said, I walked - even though I had cash in pocket. That says something.

In the advert it stated a clean title. That would be a deal breaker for sure.

Ohh wow.. I didnt see any notifications coming through for the replies to the thread. Yes, as desertrefugee mentioned he is asking 800. But, I didnt know that the title was missing until now. That is misleading in his Ad (So this points to what else could be misleading). But, if the title was there and with the current issues what could be a good price to quote (Just curious).

Going by what desertrefugee said I'd say $500-$800 "with" a title. I paid $850 for a running riding bike with a title. No title and the issues it has, you won't know for sure until you probably remove the rear cover, it is a parts bike. But to be that "firm" on the price, say in the ad "clean title", then find out there is no title. I'd probably walk too. Too many red flags.

I'm curious how he got it running at all if the starter just spins. Push start maybe?

So....... Probably shouldn't take your bike there, it appears that they don't know how to fix goldwings.
