1983 GL1100 Standard Bill of sale date 7/5/18
OK Guys and Gals!
Here we go again. I already have a 78 and 79 in process, and I got the urge to step up a few years to an 83. Since I graduated high school in '68, this is a VERY New Bike in my universe.
SO... it gets the usual, Randaakk has the order for the Carb parts.
The body panels, as the PO said were some kind of black with gold pin striping, (one of the two standard colors) So he was going to pretty it up and spray painted it with silver, and it looks as if he ran out of money for the paint, the black still shows. I wish there were ways to remove just the spray paint. But I looks like a bit of sanding and repaint. SInce I am not a painter, I can do it with a rattle can, my gravity feed air sprayer or pay a pro. I'd like to return it to original.
It's missing the seat and grab bar. Now the good.
It has all new cables,
new shop installed head gaskets and timing belts,
working brakes and newer brake pads,
GL1200 wraparound crash bars.
48630 miles.
Great compression.
I'll get pics as it progresses!

sometimes you have to wonder what some PO's were thinking when they painted. A few years back I got a left side cover for my 79, and the rattle can of many layers and colors was so thick it looked like alligator skin

I was able to get the paint to start coming off the valve covers with my thumbnail. Not so with the body panels. But hey! The rear fender is pristine!

You might try plain old rubbing compound. It typically 'cuts' into the top layer of paint pretty good. Rattle can paint generally is pretty soft...

that and many rattle can paints are reactive to gasoline. Not that it is terribly safe, but I don't know how many times I have seen rattlecanned paint come off at the gas station.

I tried a bit of rubbing compound on the false tank, it seems to be working. I might try it with my buffer tomorrow.
Seat came today, so we're on the way. Carbs are on the bench, but the shop flooded last week after a 6-10" rain overnight. I have some cleaning to do...

The carbs on the bench. It's as I expected. Lots of goop and varnish, stuck slides, gummed float pins, clogged up mains. I love my little ultrasonic cleaner, but it takes about two hours to clean each carb.

I took Track-T's advice and tried some rubbing and polishing compounds on on of the side covers and the false tank lids. I'm not sure if I'll leave them that way after I get done with them. But it sure looks better than it did.

Yep, Gord, I do need a better camera. My phone has been too long in the pocket. I can even get that soft focus to work on my family and friends. Now if I could just figure out how to get the Rose colored glasses effect!

Re: 1983 GL1100 Standard Bill of sale date 7/5/18
1, Lightly touch all the slides with 800 grit wet/dry to remove any possible hang-up burrs
2, Polish the slides on my buffer to final smooth
3. Note where the slides are catching on the carb body and chamfer the edges at those points.
4. Touch sand and polish the bores in the carb body.
So - Am I on the right track?

Re: 1983 GL1100 Standard Bill of sale date 7/5/18
I typically give the slides a good scrubbing with bunched up aluminum foil. It's just abrasive enough to clean up the scuff marks (usually). For the edges in the carb body, I use 1200 grit, but 800 should be fine. Depending on the wheel and compound, a buffer can take off quite a bit of material. My 2 cents...
