Intake Manifold Rubbers

#1

Post by Seb Astian »

I am replacing the rubbers on the intake manifold. The old ones are stuck on pretty tight and I am having to cut them off. Were these glued on originally or has the rubber simply become stuck on over time?

Why are you replacing the rubbers, and what with? I believe they are bonded to the manifolds and as you say have to be cut off. I have seen 'replacement' rubbers that are fixed with something like jubilee clips, but imho they don't look great.

I believe they were originally installed with a vulcanizing process to bond them to the runner. Me I would buy a used set of runners of flea bay or such.

I installed a set of JBM carb sockets that someone on another forum gave me (with a set of powder coated intake runners too!!) on mine when I installed the new engine. I think they look OK

They do look better than I remember, especially with all the other bits and pieces fitted. As long as they do the job............

Very clean machine, Bob. Could I briefly/slightly derail this thread and ask about the dual fuel filter config you've installed? Two tanks?

The bike's original tank and the auxiliary tank on the sidecar (I usually use up the aux tank first because it has no fuel gauge and then switch to the main tank).

And $100 for a set makes it more painful. I would go with a used set off fleabay.

I thought the same but now that they are on the bike all I notice is that they look fresh & new and have shiny new stainless clamps (Norma-Torro 9mm wide, 40-60mm dia. about $2 each). And that (without adjusting the balance from the old engine) I can actually use the idle screw to adjust the idle (it was backed out to where it didn't touch the stop before).

I think that's a pretty good compromise compared to spending money for 35 year old used rubber parts that may or may not leak or begin to leak in the near future.
