1200 Clunky Rear End (NOT drivetrain)

#1

Post by Lucien Harpress »

Just a quick question for all the experts this morning. What would cause the rear shocks on a GL1200 to clunk (quite loudly) while going over bumps? I've been noticing it for a little while, and you can tell that SOMETHING is making noise when I bounce the bike in my driveway. It seems to get a little better after a longer ride, but not much.

Apart from the noise, everything else seems to work fine. I'm guessing it's shocks, but it'd be nice to have another opinion. Thanks.

Are the shock bushings totally sacked out? Guessing it would handle darn funny, but something to check.

I replaced the standard shocks with a new set of Progressives because they were squeaking, and the new ones squeaked too! Then I really looked and they were both rubbing on the saddlebag support straps on one side. 8^(
