Next Generation 81' GL1100i
Its time...
I've started work on my GL1100 project. I've spent LOTS of time planning and deciding, sourcing parts, looking at things other people have done, printing guides, and much more. Primarily figuring out 1. What I want to do, 2. What I CAN do.
With a binder full of pictures and drawings, a low budget, and with a lot of vision its time to set off on this journey.
The simple premise is to modernize the bike. With Yamaha's XSR-700 and 900 bringing the "Modern Yet Retro" style, I'd like this bike to seem as if has just come off the design table under the same premise. New front end, new rear shocks, LED Projector headlights, a slightly more aggressive stance and riding position. I am going 2 tone color paint scheme, with Candy Wineberry Red R-114CU, and black. I have connections through my work and other areas where I can have as much as I want powdercoated, sandblasted, and access to vertical and horizontal CNC machines for the bits and pieces I cannot justify purchasing. I am good with design and engineering, I am sure you will see some scale models and orthographics of parts to come. If something is too expensive - I can make it, and I can make it better. Hopefully we can come up with some bits and pieces that the NGW community will find a use for as well.
Here are a few pictures of what has been done in the first day. I want to make sure everything is mechanically sound to begin with. Engine turns over, frame looks alright, all electronics work, looks like a decent start.
Bringing to the shop. A little bit deconstructed (Those pipes look wild. Like claws gripping the ground behind it) Rusty tank, going to have an electrolysis bath and have the inside lined. (Probably within the week) Grodi seat. Will have to reupholster with new foam. I'm thinking black leather with red inlay. Going to keep the bum shape, but round off the passenger seat. Very Corbin style. Idea for integrating and reusing a signal light as the primary brake light... Will see how this works out. And I need a new belt...

Looks like it loads at almost ground level. Lots safer than going up a ramp or a tilt.wingrider wrote:Interesting trailer! Look forward to seeing how your project takes shape!

Its a nice trailer. Next time I would do it a little different, but until this one runs out of life I'm going to keep on using what I have.wingrider wrote:Exactly! It folds all the way to the floor, and jacks back up by winch and 2 rollers on each side. A couple pins go through the main frame on each side to secure everything when travelling.
If I lived anywhere close to you I'd build one for you. It sure is nice to have!

Re: Next Generation 81' GL1100i
My fabricating skills arn't quite that good and you are well over 1000 miles away. Guess I'll keep using my tilt trailer. I did however, lower the deck a couple inches a while back. Makes it a little easier and less scary while loading and unloading.

I've got a couple welders itching to do something, so I may copy a bit of your design once I get more steel at my place. Did you build from scratch, or take a trailer and modify it?
Sorry we are talking about trailers vs your bike!

Re: Next Generation 81' GL1100i
By all means use what you need! If you can build a trailer that makes life easier - go for it. It was built from scratch, and is essentially 2-1/2 square frames made from 1/8" wall square tubing. Few clever pivot points and bam, you have a drop down trailer.wingrider wrote:I've got a couple welders itching to do something, so I may copy a bit of your design once I get more steel at my place. I would re-design how the frames are locked together though. If you look at the picture in my post you can see when the trailer is in the travel position, all 3 of the holes will line up for a bolt to go through. Misalignment is a common issue with the current design, sometimes you need to over tension the winch to get the holes to line up.
I have no problem talking about the trailer, It will make it seem like less time between updates on the build.

Re: Next Generation 81' GL1100i
Good luck with your project. You obviously have the skills to make it all work.
Speaking of trailers, I recently sold a Valkyrie to a guy from way south in Texas, who brought a trailer and ramp(s) that he uses for his garden tractor. The ramp was a bit short and the trailer was a bit tall. He wanted me to load it for him so I reluctantly agreed. After warming up the Valk and getting a nice straight shot I started up the ramp. About half way up, the rear tire started to spin and you guessed it, dropped off the ramp. No damage but front wheel is on the trailer and back is suspended in the air. Two septuagenarians simply cannot lift a 700 lb bike. Long, long story short, we ended up dragging my A-frame out of the shop and hoisting the bike up with a chain fall. Then slowly and carefully backing under the bike. I was glad that I was not going to be there to unload! Could really have used your trailer!

Re: Next Generation 81' GL1100i
Pardon the delay. I plan to enjoy building of this project at my own pace. If I've learned anything from life, is that you simply need to enjoy it - because its already being rushed.
I've figured out some direction I'm going to take. So I suppose that is a step in the RIGHT direction.
Upcoming To-Do:
Finish final stripping of frame
Source and fit new front end (Import-ante)
Electrolysis tank construction and operation - Gas tank primarily & gas cap (GROSS)
Check loom and reference diagram - prep for complete harness replacement (New M-Unit controller)
Ultrasonic bath carbs - local dealer has the machine... Will get quote
Set up engine on rotisserie - lap valves - clean carbs - adjust clearances - replace belts (?) - make puurdy
Prep select parts for sandblast & Walnut blast
Powder-coat black select parts - prime and 2 part baked black paint on others
New seat upholstery (Black vinyl with matched red inlay & stitching retaining original "HONDA" on the back)
Items to Source:
GSX-R inverted forks & Front end - Brakes & master cylinder (I think I found a donor bike... See below)
Rear hydraulic shocks (TBD)
New M-Unit controller & general electronics
Randakk's master carb kit
IM MISSING A SIDE COVER WHERE DID IT GO?!
I've decided that I'd like to go with my original color scheme. Candy wineberry primary, black secondary, with silverleaf striping and details... I'm undecided on the silverleaf, I'd like to have it very subtle - but we will see what happens... It may seem a bit preemptive to worry about this, but I'm almost ready to send stuff off to sandblast and powder-coat. It'd be a waste of time to have it all blasted and painted, then change my mind... Similar to below, with less amount of silver. I like the way the smaller stripes look.
I'd like to incorporate "LAWLESS" somewhere on the bike. I'll see where I can fit it in.
Stuff to sandblast/powdercoat/upholder/clean up/fix I like it nekkid <3 Um... Belts look brand new? Grodi tank (YUCK)

I said the same thing... "Belts look brand new". I'll tell you, what they told me... "Change them". Rule of thumb around here is 5 years or 5000 miles.
Also, you may want to change out the belt tensioner pulleys. Here is a good page to do so on the cheap with better parts...
