Anyone know if these would work?

The mufflers on my 79, which hopefully will be getting worked on this summer, are pretty well shot. I've seen you guys saying about Harley take-off but know nothing about Harleys. These seem cheap and new, so any ideas?

Harley has great chrome but the 48 is a blacked out bike so those muffs are not chrome. Not sure about those. Since the two bikes have similar air mass flow, they typically have reasonable back pressure.

I recently put 2001 Sportster mufflers on my 78 and like how they sound. They were take offs back in the day and were never used. Harley guys like custom/loud pipes. The difference to the ones you are showing is that they are all chrome instead of blacked out and pre 2003 sporster pipes did not have a cross over which simplifies the install. Lots of harley take offs are available this side of the pond as many just laid on garage shelves waiting for gl1000 owners to come along and claim them. You might be able to get them to work, I know some folks on this site have installed later model sportster mufflers but personally I would wait and look for a different set but that is just my opinion. Others may weigh in with better advice.

If they haven’t been drilled out or gutted, I think they sound great on a Wing or a Harley. One oddity is that the Sportster muffs were different lengths. I’ve heard it speculated it was to equalize flow from the different lengths, front cylinder to back cylinder. I’ve also heard it was for looks, staggered effect. The question would be whether it would affect performance at all. I guess if you were able to find two pair you could have equal lengths for two Wings. Sell or keep.

If they’re drilled or gutted, they sound trashy —- IMHO. Mine are drilled and they will get changed. I rammed a copper fitting in last summer and it sounded much better but it wouldn’t stay in. I welded mine solid to the header. I could cut, stick the fitting in from the front side and it would stay. Then re-weld or revert to mechanical connection. If it warms up I may try that.

Eric, my 2001 sportster mufflers are the exact same length and diameter. The only difference is the slightly different position of the mounting tabs, but that made mounting them on opposite sides of the bike easier. Newer sportster might be different in length. They were not punched out and IMHO sound very nice (bit throaty but not harsh and loud).

Thanks, guys. So there is little likelihood of having the internal cats in them?

Mine are the same, identical in size with a slight mod to the mounting tabs. Work great. The newer they are, the riskier. I would seriously stick with older units.

Stuff like this doesn't appear everyday in the UK; that's the problem.

I think the Cats can be removed.

Send them a request for a photo of the part number and model/s application information, etc. stamped on the side of the muffler.
If they are catalyst mufflers manufactured for the United States market, it should state that U.S. emissions specification there, also.

Take a look in my H-D muffler topic for information that may be useful, too. tumb2
I would strongly suggest looking at just the photos of the numbers and the catalyst visible in the inlet end of the muffler. :oldies

Found this interesting note from the mufflers listing, too. Unlike the H-D mufflers' inlets I've seen up to now, these mufflers appear to have a different inlet configuration. A gasket somewhat like the GL1000 uses?

"Set of brand new mufflers taken from a 2019 XL1200 '48'

Will fit most modern EFI XL models, ideal for a quick change when MOT is due!

Would recommend you change the gaskets as they are single use but have been included."
