Clutch Cable Routing

I've searched everywhere for a cable routing diagram, but the only thing I've found is a youtube video about a GL1100 which, if correct, confirms my suspicions.

I pulled the tank for replacement and when I put it back in I really had to shove it in place but got it to fit. Wasn't too surprised given everything I've read here about the tank. Looked everything over and I saw that the cable didn't make into the tank indentation. No problem I thought, just push it into place. Well I've pushed, shoved, lubricated, try to pry the tank over, etc. but all I've done is firmly wedge it in place. Took the shelter off for better access but nothing helps. It isn't moving any further.

I decided to walk away before I broke something and now think the cable should go OVER the cross brace in front off the tank. It looks like it would be a more natural path and have fewer bends. It looks like it would clear the air box without trouble. The clutch was always stiff to pull (figured it went with the territory in a MAN'S bike :) ) but all the pushing, bending, prying and jamming I've done hasn't made it any worse. Maybe that's the problem?

If it went over the top of the brace I think it would work

I know the prior owner pulled the tank for a Kreem job (it's a mess, bought another tank in surprisingly good condition) so maybe the cable was removed and put back incorrectly.

There's so much knowledge here so if I'm wrong, please tell me the trick for getting it right! If I have to pull the tank again I want it to be the last time.

BTW, sorry for the poor lighting and quality of the photos, but this is my "shop" until the new one gets built. :cry: :cry:

It is tight but it goes where you are stuck at. i think I usually remove the brake light wiring just to get it out of the way then reconnect it afterward. Cool off and try again. Once you have the angle right it should slide in there.

Thanks Whisker! Confident I don't need to pull the tank, I just went out and looked again.

It looks like it might be blocked by the edge of a weld where the frame overlaps. Since you confirmed that's where it needs to go, and I can't slide it up and pop it in the tank's relief, I decided to disconnect it from the handlebars and pull it out back to the clutch. I had to grease the entire sheath with Vaseline and tug it all the way but I got it out (left the clutch end attached). I then re-fed the cable up through the tank indentation and along the correct path to the bars. Other than smearing Vaseline all over my freshly painted tank, I'm happy how it went.

Took the opportunity to apply cable lube again so after that dries I'll reconnect the lever and see how it works. Thanks again for your very valuable advice!

Found a pic from when I bought it and was able to zoom in. Clearly, it wasn't in the right place before so maybe there was a little binding and I'll get smoother lever action now.

When shorter bars are installed, I've found it easy to loop the cable over the air filter housing to take up the slack. BTW, I remember that I had to remove the tank bolt to allow it room for moving the cable into that tunnel.
