My new to me 1984.
Runs on 2 cylinders but runs.
I contacted a Guru like no other & he said run it because bike had been laid up awhile & rings maybe gummed up.
So, following advice I stared it right up and let it idle for a couple hrs. It was then I noticed that the fuel pump runs continuously. So, we both wondered where the fuel is going. I have not had time to look at this bike with only a few minutes to spare across several days. Am not ready to seriously tear into it very far right now. But am wondering if anyone has had an issue with a GL1200 electric fuel pump that just keeps running continuously. Now that I have a short window of time & bike is cool will check crankcase to see if it has a lot of fuel in it. Anyone have this experience w elect FP?
Figure B4 I do anything at all must resolve this issue. Clymer tells me nothing on this.
Thanks fellas.

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
I've never had to tear into the carbs on my 1200 Aspy. so I'm not intimately familiar with the innards vs the older ones. but if they're anything like the 1000 rack...
my best guess might be the needles on the side that's not firing are possibly stuck open and it just keeps pumping fuel trying to fill the bowls?
Pls keep us updated on what you find.

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
Good thought Herald.
Reg GW carbs, i only know where the drainz r on my 1000. Never pulled a rack either, but that wont stop me from trying. Perhaps when I get home from my road trip july 17th, I can try & pull the carbs & check the needles etc. Both 1 & 3 are not fireing but bike starts right up. Will follow up periodically.
Thanks.

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
If the fuel were not going into the cylinders, it would be coming out the exhaust unless there is a holed piston. I doubt it's going to the crankcase. That usually happens when the bike isn't running. Some pumps do run continuously (centrifugal). Check your wiring diagram. Most electric fuel pumps also have a safety in the circuit either tilt or oil pressure. To keep from pumping fuel in event of a wreck. Some have reliefs back to the tank (SEi) or internal, some have pressure switches to cycle them.

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
Problem solved. DOAH!
I noticed that I forgot to turn the fuel valve on. Curious that she starts right up in spite of the valve being closed...will have to look in to it. Once I properly turn the fuel on the pump slows and stops pumping. I'm really new to this bike and only have a few minutes here and there to begin working on it. Any way, looks like I've answered my own mail.
Will change oil, filter and inspect oil for an inordinate amount of fuel just in case. No fuel coming out of exhaust.
I likely won't start in, in earnest till when I get back from my Columbus trip which has now evolved into a Michigan trip.
I'll do the Que on the tenth, then on up to my son's place in Mt. Clemens for a visit. That's how I'll burn off some of the days that I would have been at Vintage days that are now canceled.

With the petcock turned off the bike will run for 2 minutes and 47 seconds .... approximately ....

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
Glad ya got it figured out.
I wouldn't have thought of that but now that you mention it, my bike seems to keep running forever after I close the petcock while attempting to run the bowls dry. The electric fuel pump makes an awful knocking racket but it does keep running & pumping fuel.
For a low PSI pump it seems to have an amazing vacuum draw against a closed valve.

Re: Gl1200 Interstate fuel pump
Yes, I know its only postponed.
I mispoke. I just decided that since I'll only be 180 miles from where I used to live, Ide use those dates to go see .y friend & son.
Who knows when it will be held.
