blacked exhausts...
hardly an underground customizing vibe, but here goes... spraying my pipes black, save for my choice of one remaining heat guard and the end tip left chrome, wasn't that big a worry for me. the chrome was developing a patina that i felt detracted rather than added to the look, hence
been searching the interwire for images of something similar, but nada, which makes me think either a) crap idea, catch yourself on, or b)i'm an innovator!
anyone tried something similar and gone, wow, yup that works!
incidently, the crash bars are now black and i'm liking that a lot, so...
this year the pipes are off again receiving their now annual coating, and i thought 'what if i just leave the tip chrome, and because i can't unscrew the darn thing, paint the heat shield too...' been searching the interwire for images of something similar, but nada, which makes me think either a) crap idea, catch yourself on, or b)i'm an innovator!

Re: blacked exhausts...
Just a couple of thoughts:
-I have just had the headers on my 78 powder coated in black. I had previously cleaned them well with a wire wheel on a drill and with emery paper, primed with VHT primer, heated them, painted black VHT then heat cured them as per can instructions. The paint would still flake off and look terrible. The powder coater assured me this would no longer be the case. Stated he has done pipes before, heated them with a torch(as an experiment) after and they maintained their finish. He did a nice job but time will tell once she hits the road.
-If your mufflers are in good shape you might think about selling them to someone wanting stock pipes and buying factory black slip-ons. Doesn't look like you will be going back to the oem look.
-If you decide to paint your present setup I highly recommend that you prepare them very well or you likely are going to have a system that is hard to maintain and keep looking nice. I would recommend having the parts media blasted or if you have the equipment do it yourself.
-Cost may be a factor but if they were mine I likely would have them powder coated. Likely cost in my area about $125 per side. My neighbour just has his "sled" system done and used about the same amount of coating etc.
-I think black pipes will look nice on your bike.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: blacked exhausts...
Check out the CERAKOTE or KBS products for exhaust systems. All black looks good.

Re: blacked exhausts...
I'm gonna agree with Jonesz.
I would consider replacing the stock stuff with some nicer looking (sportier?) cans.
Your bike looks really nice, very sleek.
the huge stock mufflers kinda look out of place on it.
too big? maybe it's just me.

Re: blacked exhausts...
thanks mate, and i really appreciate the input. like myself, this ol' gal is kinda thrown together... i was lucky enough to have a lot of expensive extras on it when purchased, so i've mainly spent $$ on keeping it on the road (with the occasional cosmetic facelift ie fresh paint on the tank and panels, and a couple dreadful choices in fairing/screen/mesh headlight lens cover) so i'm more than happy with getting the aerosol out. if it scrapes/chips off, which it has in the past and no doubt will again, but glass half full WINTER PROJECT !Jonesz wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 12:34 pm Just a couple of thoughts:

Re: blacked exhausts...
gotta be honest with you, the overall look of that bike has never been one i've loved, but every now again, if i get that magic angle and the sun is being kind, it'll tug my heart strings somethin' fiercedontwantapickle wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 1:25 pm I'm gonna agree with Jonesz.

Re: blacked exhausts...
you are more than welcome. I messed around with the exact system for my 76 build.
I was thinking doing the heat shield and the chrome tip in black chrome. Kind of the best of both worlds..

Re: blacked exhausts...
after some consultation with my technical assistant, well it is her birthday, i've decided to combine the now high-gloss heat resistant on the main exhaust body with a matte black on what is now chrome. should it become one of my more heinous decisions, it'll be down to Home Depot for another aerosol of the gloss... once again mate, really appreciate you turning my lengthy explanation to the missus into an image where she could go 'that one'
