‘75 GL fuel tank

#1

Post by kabinenroller »

The tank in my GL was sealed by a previous owner, it looks to be Red-Cote. The issue is that the sealer was not allowed to flow every were inside the tank, there are bare spots that now have light surface rust showing. Also when looking into the tank through the sending unit hole I can see the screens for the pick up tubes have some of their surface blocked with sealer. I have the tank removed from the frame and plan to have it chemically stripped, that will remove everything from the inside and outside of the tank. In the past I have sealed many tanks using the KBS system, it has worked well with no failures. The issue with sealing the GL tank is the screens, it would be almost impossible to seal the tank properly and not seal the screens. Have any of you used any type of chemical on clean metal that will prevent rust from forming inside the tank once it is stripped? It would have to be something that is not affected by 10% ethanol fuel. I plan to have the outside of the tank repainted with high quality black automotive paint before installing it the frame.
Thanks!
Jim

nope. :IDTS:
While the sealer is still somewhat liquid, simply blow compressed air back through the fuel supply pipes from the fuel valve mounting boss.

This is the POR-15 fuel tank sealer kit I installed 9 years ago. 45ish dollars at that time, though.

A testament to its toughness is the sealer in my trike's fuel tank filler neck is unmarred from over 30,000 miles of fuel pump nozzle insertions/removals. ;)

Other members have satisfactorily used the POR-15 paint, without purchasing all the fuel tank sealer kit materials.
They will add their recommendations on how they proceeded with prepping and POR-15 installation 'tips'. tumb2

Thanks for the reply!
I had given compressed air a thought but was not sure if it would work, your success gives me hope. Like any other process preparation is the key to good results. The KBS system has two pre cleaning products before the sealer is installed, I normally run a warm air blower in the tank for a few hours before the sealer, the warm air dries the inside of the tank completely.
Thanks again!!

I did an RD400c tank with POR15 kit this year and it came out beautifully. Took about eight hours all told, but seems to have worked great. That is the only one that I would use, but honestly on a GL1000 I think it is best to leave it bare metal.

I used a blue sealer I got at Carquest, Northwest or Northern I think it didn't clog the screens and I also blew out the lines asap. So far, so good 3 years now.

I took one to a tank shop probably 10 years ago now. He ripped out the screens and dipped the tank then did Red Kote. It failed and caused me much heart ache and expense. now I leave mine bare.

I sealed my 76 tank with Por15 in 2007. Used the kit and followed their instruction carefully. It still looks just like it did originally. Also, I did not have to do anything with the screen. After draining the sealer the screen wasn't blocked at all. Don't remember if I had to clear the tubes.

I put used muriatic acid in mine for a week and the screen was just fine.

I was sold a rusty tank by a guy on a FB goldwing parts page. He said it had no rust, that was true only on the outside. The inside was really bad. He then ghosted me and when I complained online the mods removed the post.
Since then I only come here.

I had sealer fail in a Norton Commando tank one time... never again!
So now, I also leave mine bare.

Here's an 1100 tank that I cleaned out with vinegar and just left bare,
The screens were corroded more than anything, (notice the hole) so I
removed them while I was in there. No problems to this day.

I used soda water in mine , I used a rubber tube with some notches cut out then got some smaller steel tube that fitted inside , filled tank with soda and water hooked up battery charger and let it cook , back to bare steel, brilliant , if you have bad rust , sometimes that will stop it leaking , so check for leaks after most likely at very bottom , just Tig them up , easy .
