For a long time, I have wondered... how fast can I make a gl1000 go.
So... I built one and took it to the Bonneville Salt Flats to find out.
I just got home from racing my bike in the 2021 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials.
it's the AMA / FIM grand championship event where both National and World records are set.
and... My 76 goldwing just set a AMA National Land Speed record !
I made 7 passes on the world famous race track with my fastest speed being 133.160 mph.
The old record in the class was 127.128 and the new record is 130.629 mph.
I bumped the record up 3 1/2 mph.

ETA..no front brake? How did it stop with just a back brake in terms of handling?

The rear brake is hooked up to the handlebars. Using only rear brake helps to control head shake in a speed wobble.
It's land speed racing ... don't touch the brakes.

Wow! What an accomplishment! it looks great and goes fast too. You gotta be really happy with setting a new speed record. Don’t know you personally, but really proud of what you have done. Would love to see more pics of the build.
Congrats, and thanks for championing the GL1000s (and, of course yours) abilities to the world! BTW, did you do anything special to keep the pads away from the disks when they weren't being used?

Very cool and congratulations. Based on a prior topic about Bonneville, it looks like you made a previous visit out to the salt and were inspired to give it a go yourself this year. What modifications did you make?

It's a racing bike , it don't need a seat.

so there is enough real estate for you to coast to a stop? I assumed with the streamliners and other classes deploying chutes that the shut down area must be limited.
