Modular helmets

#1

Post by redglbx »

Hey guy’s

Not looking to start an oil/tires type thread here but my helmet a modular Scorpion Exo 3000 GT w/sun shield broke the release lever yesterday which wouldn’t allow me to lift the chin bar which made it REAL fun to get off, luckily I had just got home.

So those of you that wear a modular helmet what do you have ? Likes & dislikes ? Is it noisey ? I do always wear ear plugs. Also I have a oval shaped head which caused the loss of hair and hotspots on the crown of my head with the previous HJC full face, the Scorpion was quite comfy that way. I’ve had the Scoropion a little less than 10yrs and yes I know they say to replace them every7 years.

But I put this in the same category replacing a perfectly good tire at 4-5yrs that has zero cracking just because of it’s age, I don’t buy into it ! The Scorpion was still snug on my head and the lining was still in great shape, worked good !

So, since it’s been a very long time since I’ve bought a helmet what do you suggest and why ?

I have an HJC modular but my previous helmet was a Scorpion modular. The scorpion failed the same way yours did but I don't think I got 10 years out of it. IIRC I fixed the cable which broke with a wire fishing leader but it only lasted a year. I don't know how long I've had my HJC modular, its been a long time, but I'm very happy with it and never a problem.

gmax modular here. I've had it for 6 years. love the fact you can open it to cool down when you stop and carry on an unmuffled conversation.
my only complaint is the wind noise..

Thanks guys !

Matt, I know “they” say that you should replace your helmet every 7yrs, but I think it’s just a marketing scam, like your tires are 5 yrs old and should be replaced. On my Scorpion, the liner was still good and it all fit snugly , wouldn’t move loosely if I shook my head. Nothing was cracked or broken until it did, now it’s in the trash. Tires, I don’t replace them until they are worn out or have visible cracks/splits, it’s just a waste of money otherwise. My .02

I several helmets. Different ones for different bikes. I tend to match my helmets to my bikes. Because of that, many of them sit on the shelve, in their fleece lined bags, most of the time. I can tell when they need replacment because of their condition, not their age. If ever in an accident, they are replaced, even if damage is minor. I almost never wear my modular, I just don't like it, so It might last forever

I have an HJC modular, it’s OK, but noisy.

90% of the time I ride with an HJC 3/4 open face with a partial face shield clipped on.

Probably won’t help much in a fall, but I’m already pretty ugly …

Thanks Rat & Cyborg, Great infoRat, thanks ! Cyborg i 100% agree with you, replacement is by condition not by age by me. I used to have several helmets for different bikes like you but quite frankly the Scorpion was so comfy for me that’s pretty much what I’ve stuck with. I am leaning towards another Scorpion but maybe a Schuberth, I’m just limited to places that have helmets, either the Elkhart dealer I bought my bike from or Hd dealers.

if you go with another scorpion then you can order it online because you know it fits you good.
I bought my shoei full face online and got lucky but the website I ordered from gives great tutorials on how to measure for one, great customer feed back on helmets in regards to fit, ventilation, noise, etc

....the rubber on tires does break down over time.... lots of reasons, ozone, UV light and those pesky free radicals, especially...
WHY does a helmet protect you? the hard outer shell takes the intial impact, but wearing a hard shell does NOT protect your head from brain injury.... the FOAM is to soften the impact and therefore protect your brain.... FOAM breaks down over time.

Having said all that... my actually slow impact with a car that ran a stop in front of me, threw me maybe 10 feet.... I was dazed (wearing a helmet)... for a year I would have episodes of vertigo when tired... I consulted a DOC I know who works with college football, and he said it was VERY TYPICAL

I've got a Schuberth C3 that is much quieter than my old Shoei Neotec 1. Both fit very well, but the Schuberth has a front opening so narrow that it presses on my glasses where the Shoei doesn't.
Also have a Shoei Hornet. I like the modular helmets, but take the full-face about as often.

I also have a Gmax but I am very happy with mine. I wear mine primarily in the cold weather so I bought a GM54S (the snowmobile version of the GM54 street helmet - the same except that it comes with a breath box, front & rear neck aprons and 2 layer shield). I find it much quieter than the helmets I had before it, whether the chinbar is up or down, the shield is open or closed or with the sun shade down or just glasses.
My summer helmet is also a Gmax and both of them fit better and are more comfortable than any helmets I've owned before.
They no longer sell the GM54 but when the time comes I will look for another Gmax modular helmet to replace it.

The only issue I've had while wearing the modular helmet is that I tend to open it as soon as I pull into the garage and with the chinbar up it adds a few inches to my height and the doorways inside the garage are a bit lower than standard height so every year I hit the bottom of the chinbar a couple of times before I get used to ducking an inch when going through them ;-)

Thanks guys ! I ordered a Schuberth c3 Pro lite , should be here in a day or two. The only concern I have is that Schuberth’s fitment guide has me buying an XL helmet whereas my previous Scorpion was an XXL and I do realize different manufacturers so different sizing guides.

The good thing is that my size is at the bottom end of the Schuberth’s XL range. So we’ll see, I’ll just have to send it back if it doesn’t fit. I bought from CycleGear by the way, same pricing as Revzilla but they showed availability at their Indianapolis store about 120mi from me,,, of course they shipped it from their Utah facility 😱🙈
