Front Turn Signal Adapter for Aftermarket signals

#1

Post by tory »

I have been messing around looking for a clean way to utilize the original front turnsignal mounts with aftermarket units. I decided a bushing in the original location drilled and tapped for the smaller aftermarket is my best option.

Can anyone tell me the size and thread of the OE front turnsignal post for a 1978? Goldwing of course.

These are the polished aluminum duel element turnsignals I used. Nice solid unit with clean look. However the mount stem is much smaller than the original hole. I wanted to use that hole so it was not just there and empty.

The original hole for the 78 and older is 14x1.5 The stem on the replacement is 10x1.25
I dug around at one of my stores for adapters to work with the hole and found a metric brake line nut with the 14x1.5 thread. I then drilled and tapped the hole in the nut out to the 10x1.25 needed.

I did have to cut back both the stem and nuts so they did not bottom out on the forks, and left room for the 3 wires.

To hide the black nut I slipped an Oring over it. I am very happy with the results.

Great solution, might be good for shop talk if you supply the tap thread size and such. Sure looks great!

The original holes turned out to be 14x1.5. These particular aftermarket studs are 10x1.25. But I am sure other brands can be other sizes.

I did also post this in my build thread.

Tried to delete thread and move to shop talk with more detail, but can't figure out how.

I've made several such adapters on my little Harbor Freight lathe. Although by no means a high-accuracy toolroom machine, it is great for spinning out such items.

FWIW Saber Cycle stocks them for the GL1000 for $15 each, although a quick check shows the fronts to be out of stock; they do have some of the rear mounts. The ones from 4into1 are too small (M12 diameter). I had pretty much the same problem with the rear ones so I had to get creative with some aluminum tubing, and I pillaged the light mounts from the old Vetter fairing. Doesn't look too bad...:

I could probably stand to cut the tube a little shorter, but they work. The pic makes them look a little 'wider' than they are. Cutting a hole in the right spot on the tube and fishing the wiring through it was the hardest part.

Sabre cycle used to have a REALLY bad reputation. Not standing by their stuff, and banning anyone who asked questions etc.

Full disclosure.... Sabre cycle banned me

Have not heard anything bad about them in a long while, but yes in the past I would rater have caught a STD than deal with them. It is hard for a business to recover from the level of bad press they received but they continue on so they must be doing something right. I understand there was a employee house cleaning a little more than a decade ago and most of the issues seem to have gone with that evolution. I would be tempted to try them again but I would be certain to stay away from the house brand when it comes to important parts. Some of the Barracuda line of parts were quite horrendous.
