Re: Can't see oil level on my 75
My 1000 is similar to yours, in that it seems to go through oil pretty quick with no real leaks. All I can figure is a combination of blowby and valve seals gets most of it burned. Annoying, but if your bike runs fine not worth breaking the engine apart to fix.

Lucien, on my 76 on a trip to the CWC homecoming my 76 just drank the oil out of it, I went through nearly 3 quarts in around 300miles which shocked the heck outta me since it never used oil prior to this.I worked on it prior to the trip and when I started checking things I found I didn’t reconnect the crankcase vent at the air cleaner. So I reconnected the crankcase breather back up to the aircleaner box.
Since doing this my 76 has not used any oil at all again in the past 10yrs or so. So make sure your breather is all connected and functioning. Maybe take the separation can off the back of the motor, clean it out and make sure the foam separation filters are in place.
On my 76 a side benefit is that I also got a bump in fuel economy, good to have a negative pressure in the crankcase. my .02

Re: Can't see oil level on my 75
Interesting. I cleaned out the can, straightened and reconnected the hoses to the air box this season after I complained about the puffs of smoke I got on my leg out of the can. But my engine did not like that and hesitated a lot when giving throttle, so I disconnected the hose from the airbox, pointed it down and all was good again
I refilled today with rotella (3 qts) plus a quart of motor medic motor flush, ran 5 mins and parked her on the side stand still running which I usually don't do. I could see the oil slushing around in the sight glass just right under to upper mark.
Not sure if that was due to the overfill or just my new discovered method to see if I have enough oil in there...

Is the 75 case with the verical sight hole the same on the inside as the later ones with the round sight glass? I've only had the one 75 crankcase set, some long time ago , and don't remember.cfairweather wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:53 pm I have some good news for you. You can clean it with a brush. Get a high quality one that won't "shed" bristles.
This picture will hep you see where you need to go with the brush. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

They all look like this one except the 75 didn't have a wiper.

You can always do what I did (you can probably ignore everything after my initial post because the rest is 99% digression)

That worked well for a solo bike, but when I added the sidecar that was no longer possible. I have not-so-fond memories of checking the oil on my first 'Wing sidecar outfit many years ago by putting my chest on the seat and hanging my head between the sidecar & bike with a trouble light, a little brush and a screwdriver, trying to read the level before the blood rushed to my head. I knew for sure that I did not want to have do that again so I broke down and bought a dipstick kit.
I was fortunate to find a NOS Drag Specialties dipstick kit on eBay when I needed one. I don't know of a current source for dipstick kits but a certain member of this forum has been known to produce them when there has been enough demand....

I said that in 2006 and it still holds true.A few words about oil levels are appropriate here: A couple of years ago something I read on another board about the accuracy of dipsticks and how much oil should be put into an engine got me thinking. Before that I had always filled engines to the upper mark and topped them up when they reached 1/2 way down, every couple of fill-ups. I tried putting the exact amount of oil Honda specifies into my engine and it came exactly 1/2 way between the upper and lower marks - right where the wiper is. I decided to try running it with the oil at this level for awhile to see what happened. Miracle of miracles - my engine stopped using oil! Now it only needs about 1/2 litre in 6,000Km.

Thanks Bob,
I still don't understand why my engine hesitates so badly when I connect the crankcase breather to the airbox.
Any ideas?

Re: Can't see oil level on my 75
I have no idea why it would do that. I had the breather hose ice up so badly that oil sprayed out of a seal and the engine felt pretty normal.

Re: Can't see oil level on my 75
I think it is possible your piston rings have excessive blow-by. This might be causing an excessive amount of pressure coming out of the breather tube. There is probably a mist of oil coming out of the tube too. The excessive pressure and the oil mist might be choking the bike. Just a theory and a guess. How many miles are on the bike?

30,500 miles. Yes there is a small mist coming out.
For now I just pointed the hose down towards the swingarm and it's dirty there all the time also due to my leaking brake master that I rebuilt. It needs a refill and air purge every 500 miles.

Re: Can't see oil level on my 75
If it were mine, I would take the engine out and replace the rings. I usually replace the rings on the GL1000s that I "resurrect." After sitting for 10, 20, 30 or 40 years, I feel it is best to be replace them instead of trying to free them up with oil and/or just running the engine. Sometimes they are stuck in the grooves and difficult to remove. I also usually replace the primary chain and install a later primary chain tensioner. It is a chance to clean everything and give the engine a fresh start for another 40+ years.
