As I attempted to replace the head gasket on my 76 project bike, I ran into another unanticipated complication. The tutorial simply says, "remove the timing belts and pulleys". What the tutorial does not say is that sometimes these pulleys are next to impossible to get off. One experienced mechanic that I spoke today today told me of a time that he had to take the camshaft with gear attached to a machine shop to have it pressed off.
In this short video, I am able to find a work-around that allowed me to continue.

I use a small gear puller to remove ones that are stuck. You can get a set of three pullers in a kit from Harbor Freight and I use the small one to pull it off. Works great.

You don't need to remove the pulleys from the cams to change the headgaskets.

But it's a good idea to change the cam seals while you are there. So the gear does need to come off then.dontwantapickle wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:22 pm You don't need to remove the pulleys from the cams to change the headgaskets.

Thanks Cedric. I only had a pretty heavy-duty gear puller and the pulling arms were too beefy to fit in behind the gear. Next time I'm in town, I will pick up the set at HF.cfairweather wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:12 pm I use a small gear puller to remove ones that are stuck. Len, one suggestion I would add if using the gear puller is to make sure you put a screw with no washer, preferably a socket head so the pulley will pull over it, I do this to prevent damaging the threads in the end of the cam. By the way Len, loved your videos !
Good job !

The front cam seals can be changed with the pully stuck tight on the end of the cam - I've done it.robin1731 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 9:58 pmBut it's a good idea to change the cam seals while you are there. You just gotta remove the cam from the head and oil seal can be worked off of the back.

If you remove the cam complete with wheel, you can cut the old seal off. But how do you get the new seal over the cam lobes and locator without damaging it?dontwantapickle wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2023 10:27 amThe front cam seals can be changed with the pully stuck tight on the end of the cam - I've done it.robin1731 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 9:58 pmBut it's a good idea to change the cam seals while you are there.
