synchronizing gl1000 carbs

#1

Post by leonardhcross »

Hello NGW friends. After several stops and starts, I am now ready to synchronize the carbs on my 76 GL1000. All the suggested prep work has been done. I gave it a shot yesterday and feel pretty good about my progress. But, here is a specific question. When I attach my test guages, I am getting a consistent reading at around 7 on all four. My manual tells me that my reading should be at or near 21. According to the guage, my readings indicate a likely vacuum leak. Playing a propane torch around my intakes had no effect on the idle. I assumed that I had a major leak somewhere. Until I watched this video on YT. This guy seems competent and did a decent job on the video. But, his readings were similar to mine and he went ahead and completed the balance at a reading of 8. Here is the video. Can someone clarify for me? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sct7D8JqBno

Disregard (revisit) the manual.
The man in the video is pretty good with presentation. ;)

Vacuum can be measured in more than one unit.

Inches of mercury=in/hg

centimeters of mercury= cm/hg

What confused me is that, at a reading of 8, the needles in the video are reading in a red zone on the guage which reads ...." late timing or leak at intake manifold".

Gauge ranges are marked for a car. One thing, make sure timing and valve adjustment is perfect before balancing. then set RPM, balance, reset RPM, rebalance. may take a few laps.

Thanks, pidjones. I am not clear about your conclusion that the guage ranges are made for cars. I would assume that "inches of mercury" are "inches of mercury" regardless of what manifold one is tapping into. The Haynes manual says that I should get a vacuum reading of around 21 inches of mercury. The video that I attached shows a reading of 8 inches of mercury which is about what my guages are reading. I will do exactly as you have suggested. Slowly, step-by-step. I am just puzzled about the vacuum readings.

The green and orange range labeling is for cars. And please, burn the Haynes manual.

Len, I'd reckon that Haynes manual states GL1000(?) carburetors' idle speed synchronization vacuum target will be 21
cm/hg ( centimeters of mercury ) Why, Cliff? 🤔 How do you reckon that has any relevance to Dan Filipi's GL1100 video?

answer...That's an example of yet Another probable mis-print, Haynes manual typographical error, Len.

A comparitive units of measure conversion equation results show that 21cm/hg = 8.27 in/hg . You will discover "mercury sticks" , see: viewtopic.php?t=18015&hilit=Vacuum&start=15 and the Carbtune Pro carburetor synchronizer tools both utilize the cm/hg unit of vacuum measure on their respective vertical column displays.

That blue painted 4 vacuum gauges panel that Dan utilizes in his video, is the same go-to diagnostic tool that I own and many hundreds ( thousands ) of motorcycle owners utilize, too, is sourced from Amazon, ebay, etc., for a reasonable price.

ALSO! Completely Disregard anybodys' advisement that the #3 carburetor is a 'reference' carburetor. no...it's...not

I use the regular blue painted set of gauges that everyone has and honestly, I don't care what the numbers are,
just that all 4 end up the same.

fwiw:
tuned engines are usually in the 8-10 range on my gauges.

Thankyou NGW friends for your insights. Many of us seem to have the same balancing rack. It sure helps those of us with limited experience to know that the guage needle pointing to "8" in the red, "manifold leak" zone is an acceptable reading for our bikes. Apparently, what matters is adjusting all carbs to the same reading. I'm not sure that I can bring myself to burn my Haynes manual. Here is a picture. I think it is as old as the bike and I'm kind of attached to it. I will just set it on the shelf.

This is my second try at synching the rebuilt carbs on my GL1000 project bike. After receiving several comments, it appears that it does not matter where the needle points on our synching guages. It only matters that you synch them so that they are all pointing at the same place. The bike is starting and running more smoothly with each start-up. Here is a short video showing my guages during synching. What do you say? Are they there yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlkI0Gu8Ug4
