GL 1200 valves

#1

Post by MonkeyWrench »

...So... I picked up a slightly wheezy 'ol 1984 GL1200 a few months ago (intending for it to be a project bike.) Unfortunately I was hardly able to ride before discovering it had a blown head gasket. My bad for not insisting on a compression test before doing the deal. I've been too damn busy with other stuff to do much about it until recently. I got the head pulled off and took into a local machine shop, they tested for flat (they found .004 out, so they will give it a skim.) I told them I was all but certain that it could use a valve grind at the very least – I'd filled the domes with brake fluid and left to soak for carbon cleanup, but much of it had leaked within a couple of days. The shop gave it a vacuum test and confirmed that the valves could use attention. They are asking if I can get a valve kit for it.
I'm happy to go that route if there is a kit available ? But don't know where to start looking. Any suggestions ? Or is it just down to whatever used parts can be scrounged?

Also I've heard mention of a "parts substitution" database ? Does anyone have a suggestion for where I might find a copy ?

Thanks in advance,

It appears you can order aftermarket valves on Ebay...no personal experience with them, but if you look on any parts website, I tend to use Partspitstop as one, you can find part #'s to google and find replacements.

Due to Stellite coating don't grind the valves ever! Lap them instead.
