Final Drive shaft

#1

Post by gdonlo04 »

hello, i have a 1975 GL 1000. The shaft has a grease nipple on it. i think this is from a diff year bike. when i look at the part manual the 1975 did not have a grease nipple. Should i be greasing the shaft?
I could not find any service manual references for greasing the shaft.
Also a question, I took this to the Honda Motorcycle shop in Shelby NC. asked the owner sho is in his sixties the question about greasing. He looked at it and told me that is not the original shaft. I asked him if i should grease it and he could not/would not answer my question. I asked him if he could try to grease it for me. I told him i will pay. He said he needed a special end for the grease gun with a bend it in . I looked at him, then looked at the amount of space to put a grease gun on, and scratched my head. WOW that seems weird. was he telling me the truth?

I would grease the splines when you take it apart. Should be every couple of years, depending on mileage. And be sure to use the correct grease.

Cyborg is correct. Shooting grease into that fitting doesn't do much good because the grease doesn't go where it's needed. Using a high grade moly paste/grease on the splines each time you change a tire is very adequate in my opinion.

Wait a minute.
Are you talking about the grease fitting (zerk) on the swingarm next to the final drive or do you mean a grease fitting in the universal joint itself?
