kick stand down warning switch gl1100

#1

Post by embee »

I saw the post on Jimmy Switch someone made. The switch activated a buzzer or something like that when the kick stand was down.
Anyone has thoughts on best way to add something to my gl1100 to warn me or prevent me from driving off with kick stand down.
maybe something simple or aftermarket? Thanks

Pretty sure there is a thread from Roady on here since he suffered that ill., I added a micro switch at the kick stand and put a red warning light on the dash. Works great for me.

I've never heard it called "jimmy switch" before.....

I added a kickstand warning on my first bike but keeping it working was more trouble than it was worth. I hope you have better results because it seems to me it would be a good idea.

Honda sidestands are supposed to have a rubber piece attached that pushes the stand back enough for the spring to retract it if it touches down while moving. I guess that's better than nothing but it is not a reliable system, especially if the rubber piece is worn (the Owner's Manual dies tell you to inspect it and replace when it is worn to the mark).

I recently learned that Germany requires that either the engine won't run in gear with the side stand down or the stand must automatically retract when there is no weight on it.

BTW, I have removed both the side and centre stands on both of my bikes because they both have sidecars. I did keep the stands and attach them on the rare occasions when I need to separate the bike and sidecar to work on something (last time was 2018) :orange :orange :orange

It started with the winter one; I changed the exhaust and the side stand hit so since I didn't use it I just removed it. At first I left the centre stand on to use when changing tires or when I separate the bike and sidecar but it is easier to use a jack for tires (I need it for the sidecar wheel anyway) and it can be years before I need to separate them. It was mostly just dragging in the snow or being sprayed with salt water and getting rusty so I eventually removed it too. When I added the sidecar to Mr.H I removed the stands as a matter of course.
