shinko 777 on 83 GL1100

#1

Post by embee »

I ride 2 different 83 GL1100. I rebuilt forks on both and installed progressive springs and removed air crossover. And the steering stem bearings/races have been replaced on one.
I installed the 999 on the rear of both last November and a 777 front on both at the same time. (front not available on 999) The rear one a size smaller 130 instead of 140 because the 777 previously on the rear but after inflation measured 150 and rubbed the swing arm so I didn't want to risk a 140 and then have to return it or have it rub.
One thing I noticed about the 777 is how it expands a lot after heating up.
Living in the mountains of WNC the curves are aggressive sometimes and I ride slow usually.
One of the new 777s was warped new but couldn't return after mounting the other one seemed ok.
2500 miles the rears look ok to me on the 999s both bikes.
2500 miles on the front with 777s, one warped and unbalance Ible and one cupping bad enough to cause wobble in curves and de acieration.
Of the sets of tires, I have mounted and used none of them caused a wobble, none were warped out the box.
I can't say that for the Shinko 777, Just saying.
I ordered inexpensive IRC flame for the front of bike that now has a wobble from cupping, I will check ware pattern if any and confirm that the 777s are not worth the risk.
If someone asked me to recommend 777s I would have to decline. Sorry Shinko but discontinue this tire.

I’ve never had a problem with any of the Shinko’s I’ve used , on balancing they seem to need no weights or a fair amount which is a bit unusual ,, but my Shinko experience has been good and the wear was very good…

On the wobble,, I’d bet you have a steering head bearing problem imho. On all of my GL’s they all have tapered steering head bearings (Alls Balls) and in my option the only way to go, much more stabile, no wobbles ever !

I have used Shinko's on my 78 for years. I use balance beads. Wear is fair. Price is great. Traction is wonderful. They check all the boxes for me on my 78

I have ordered new front wheel bearings to replace current ones. One feels smooth one feels a little less smooth, but I question bad enough to cause scallops.
The steering tube has new bearings and are tight.
Just to satisfy my curiosity I dropped the front to 36 lb cold and went on short ride maybe 30 minutes then checked pressure
now at 42.
777s up front and rear just expand too much especially on a hot day.

Never had a problem with Shinko's, other than faster wear particularly in the rear. I love how they stick to the road and less expensive when compared to other makes.

If it were me,,, I’d be retorquing the head bearings before I did much of anything else ! That’s almost always the cause of “wobbles” in the front,, at least that’s been my experience.

I believe that all the bikes that I ride have tapered roller head bearings in them, they just tighten the handling up a bunch and make the bike feel way more solid. The thing I try to explain on this is that when you go from ball bearing point of contact (.) to a tapered roller line contact (l) you have a much better contact patch to carry the load… can’t emphasize it enough.
