Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Karl from Germany,
I am not sure how much power my fuel pump will pull, I am running an electric fuel pump now, but I am sure the higher pressure one will use more power. The Microsquirt does not use a lot of power, to run the computer is milliamps, like a single light bulb. The injector firing curcuit uses more power than the main computer to fire the injectors, we shall see what it does.
I have installed a HID head light and run LED lights on other lights on the bike to reduce load on the electrical system.
I am very interested in the injectors that install in the carberator bodies, that is a really neat idea.
The problem I see with it is that you would still have to balance the flow to 4 throttle bodies (synchronize) I like to get away from that necessity.
I am pressently running a VW type carberator (single carb.) and it works very well, makes the engine run nice and even all the time.
One big reason I am doing the EFI system is due to the fuel we have available at the gas stations now. Almost all of it has 10% or so of alcohol in it, and you can buy E-85. The plan is to put higher % alcohol in the gas in the future.
To make any engine run well on the higher levels of alcohol will require adjustment of the induction system and ignition system.
With pure alcohol one needs about 40% more fuel to run well and 10 to 15 degrees More (around 24 degrees or so) advance on the ignition.
This all can be done with the system I am working on using the Microsquirt tuning. I am going to get the fuel injection going and then work on the ignition system.

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Sorry for the long post............
I got the fuel manifold the other day, It has six ports in it; One 3/8 inch feed port, Four (4) 1/4 inch injector feed ports and One 1/8 inch monitor port.
Getting ready to get serious about the fuel system and testing. It has been too hot to weld in my shop, I need to weld my manifold up and weld the throttle cable holders on the manifold.
Hope to have some progess soon. I hope it gets below 100 degrees F here soon, it is 87 now and the local time is 04:00, that is early morning.
Keep riding

Some of you may be interested in my Rectifier/Regulator swap project. Here is the link....
http://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36201
It does have some impact on this EFI project as it gives me more room for electronics in the faux tank area.
Also it increases the capacity of the charging system a little due to greater effeciency.
It has cooled a lot here in Joplin, should get some welding done soon, to the manifold etc. and make some headway on the EFI installation....
Standby

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Great to read about your EFi project , just to offer you some encoragement I've been running a supercharged GL1500 with a megasquirt 1 with MS extra code controlling fuel and spark for a couple of years now and am very pleased with the results.Although I'm still fiddling with the tuning (a wideband sensor is a huge benifit here) .
I used JB weld to seal my injectors to the manifolds with no issues , I also used an Escort throttle body and whatever sensors came to hand ,I used Injectors from a 2.5 V6 car that developed slightly more horsepower (180)than my target (150) so I was sure that they were big enough but not way too big. I will try to add some pics.

Please post a pic of Your fuel rail, I like the way the injectors are hidden below/behind the runners. Great job!
Can You help me with some Megatune screenshots when I try my setup next time?

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
I used the stock Rover V6 fuel rails as fortunately for me the spacing was close enough for me to machine the intake manifolds to suit. I did have to machine the water jacket on the manifolds away to get enough space for the fuel rail and wiring, this was no big deal as with port injection there is no need to heat the manifold.
I found the megasquirt forums to be of great help when I had initail issues with my set up . although I am willing to offer any help and advice my limited experience may provide.

Great job!
It shows that sometimes things which sound easy like to "drill injector pockets" are more work than expected...

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Hey,
Thanks for posting that, there are some working on injecting 1500 using 1800 parts. Seems a good thing to do but they may be relying on 1800 parts too much!!!
JMHO

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Howdy,
Been working on my manifold, here are some pics.......
Out with the 1 inch pipe and in with the 1.5 inch pipe,,,, MORE BETTER!!!!!

About ready to weld the 1.5 inch pipe in for the Throttle body.

So, maybe next week I can do some welding and get the old JD manifold ready for EFI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am getting anxious to get this working. I have kind of delayed because I have been riding the bike a lot and had other projects that had to be worked on. I am working on putting a car tire on my bike right now tooo.
Plus I have to mow a lot etc. during the summer.
I also had to work on my Dodge Cummins some this summer to get it ready for winter....

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
Howdy, I got some work done today, got the intake manifold welded up and ready to go, here is a picture of it.
Note it is a LDwingnut manifold modified with 1 1/2 inch pipe to the flange for the Throttle body.....

Note: I also got mounting for the throttle cables to go to the throttle body welded on to the flange for the Throttle Body.
As installed the cables line up with the part on the Throttle Body where the cables attach.
The Throttle Cables will attach on the rear of the manifold assembly like they do on the OEM carb assembly.
I will be installing the computer on the bike soon and start hooking up sensors and doing testing with components before removing the carberator that is on the bike. I presently am running a VW type carb. on the bike now. I want to see how the Oxygen sensor is working with it running the bike and test all the sensors before I pull the carb off.
When I pull the carb I am going to pull the radiator and change out the fan sensor for a CTS and change timing belts, put new radiator hoses on the bike and do a few other things while I have it torn apart.
After that I will get the bike running on EFI, by the way the computer will turn the fan on and off,,, Hopfully!!

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, November is half over already!!!!
I have been very busy, at work and at play. I had to do some riding, the weather was just too good, and some shooting, have not made it to the woods to shoot at the deer...
The wife and I went to Cozumel, Mexico by way of Galveston, TX. and a big cruise ship, that was gooood.
I finally got to work on the EFI project this week,
I put a vacuum port in the throttle body that I determined that would be a good thing to do.....

This will give me manifold vacuum right below the throttle plate, the throttle body already has a port on it but it is ported to just above the throttle plate.
I also mounted the computer on the bike. I have not made any electical connections to it yet, just got it mounted......

Will start connecting stuff soon..

This is cool. I want to see how this works out. I hope you can document setup and tuning so we can copy. I was about to give this another bump.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

UPDATE......................
Just wanted to get in here and let ya'all know I am still workin on this thing.
I have been wiring up stuff, don't have no pictures but I got the Oxygen sensor wired today and few other things taken care of and just about froze my BeeeHind off, it is cold in Joplin!!!!!!!!!!!
Anxious to get this thing going, Hang On, I am workin............

Glad to hear you are still moving forward on it. I am following this project closely with the intention to learn from it and to do the same project myself in the near future.

Re: 79 GW EFI Project
I am in the process of getting the computer wired up so I can hook up sensors and test them with the computer (MicroSquirt).
I will get the fan relay hooked up and make sure it is working properly.
Then I will plumb up the fuel system and test it (bench check).
I will do all this before I remove the carb that is on the bike now, once I have everything tested that I can test I will pull the radiator and change out the fan switch for the CLT sensor (wire fan to relay), change timing belts, flush the cooling system.
Then I will pull the carb and install the EFI system. Once I have everything back together I will hopefully start the bike with the EFI system working, and start tuning.
Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, Yea, Merry Christmas to all.........
