Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
I used a high temp clear (can't remember the brand) and it never cured. Ended up wiping it off with acetone and gasoline, then respray with regular gloss BBQ paint.

Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
Reviews of this product suggests it works if the directions are followed exactly. I looked over the sanded parts and I need to hit them again as some chrome plated areas escaped me.

Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
Guys
Does anyone have a beat on where to get the missing washer for the oil filter? I’m also going to need parts to rebuild the starter. I was able to remove it today but the rear exhaust stud on cylinder 4 had to be removed in order to get the starter out. The engine covers are back on now as well.

Guys
I'm going to resume my resto next week and I was wondering if I could fit a 83 1100 front end and rear swing arm with final Drive to my 78 GL1000.

Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
Rebuilding the final drive is project all by itself. Some of the parts are really hard to find.
It was 12 years ago, but "Old Fogey" was able to scratch up the very odd seal for the drive shaft input.
It's #20 in the fiche "OIL SEAL (32X67X8) X 001 91261-371-013"
A quick search for the part number showed THIS SELLER on Amazon has 3.

Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
GalDemSuga. Your thread popped back up top, which put it on my radar again.
Reading the last couple pages, I saw that you got the answer on the rear swingarm swap (doable - if you're really ready for some work).
Nobody answered your '83 front end swap question.
I did that swap on my '79 Ginger Lynn build a few years back: viewtopic.php?t=76999&hilit=ginger+lynn ... 20#p813173
I'd call it pretty easy to do, with good results where it matters - front end. I'm super pleased with it If you have an '83 front end, including a wheel for that fork, go for it! I don't think the welding I did would be required for safe operation.

Re: 1978 GL1000 Restoration
Thanks for the motivation. I've decided to stop my mods at just the 77 GL1000 Tank shelter, the electrical improvements, beefing up the cooling system and simplifying the fuel system. I plan to begin this Thursday and I will post my progress and what I'm up to.NotSoLilCrippseys wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 7:47 pm GalDemSuga. On another note, I've fallen madly in love with the 1200 standards and hope to find one that's run down to restore later on.
