Here's where I am at the moment. When pushing down on the left case to insert the pistons, my back took a hike...major spasms. Go figure....I'm pushing down and the back goes out. At the moment I'm waiting on a goodly sized order of various gaskets, o-rings, etc., stuff needed to reassemble the engine. Today I just received my new belts and Wix filter in the mail from Rock Auto. Probably be another couple weeks before everything I ordered will arrive. Just as well, hurts to walk anyway.
This is my somewhat cluttered garage with the engine sitting on the lift table I bought for this project. A real lifesaver...discounting the back which goes back to my days in the USAF. I took a chance on a set of low mileage used pistons/rods for $39 w/free shipping. Picked up some Plastigage to check the bearing clearance and also slipped off the top rings to check the end gap. All was well within specs so decided to reuse them "as is." I did rehone both cylinders on the left side. Since the rings on #2 had moved around a bit, I knew they weren't going to be reinserted in the same grooves/wear patterns previously established. By rehoning both cylinders, that should allow both to "reseat" into a new pattern. My next project is painting the engine, haven't decided on color as yet. The frame has a hammered black coat(2) that gives it a grey cast from a distance. Thinking either a silver colored block with all attachments & covers in black...or....just the reverse; black block with attachments and covers in silver. Would like to find something that is black with a silver fleck in it.

The "before."

And "after."

Loving this table. Notice the two arms in the lower left used as a stop to prevent loss of fingers, etc.? That puts the table and whatever project you're working on just below chest high when seated in a chair or a stool. It goes up another 8-10", and drops to about 8" at the lowest point.

That's a great pic and I'm stealing it to use when replying to the guy who says, "The belts look good." :-)

Isn't it great, Cliff?

After putting the words on, I thought, "How redundant."

In this case, the belts appeared to be new. However, the left one...side with the damage, was so loose I was able to slip it off without loosening the tensioner. It had at least 3/4" slack or more in it so more than likely it jumped timing. Looked to me as though someone had replaced the belts and didn't know what they were doing. It was clean under the front covers...no belt dust/residue normally seen after a few thousand miles. The tensioner was bolted down tight so it wasn't a case of working loose. The right side was much tighter and on the mark, although still too much slack.

I know the question has come up many times in the past as to the life of these belts. Years ago I had an old Wing mechanic tell me "those belts are guaranteed for the life of the engine....you break a belt, that's the life of the engine." Kinda sticks with you when put that way. lolol

Very well put, by now anyone getting a GL from ANYONE should make that their first job. Just put new ones on today so feeling pleased with myself. Can see a point where I will be able to start it up to see if it works. Still need to take the tank out and get it sorted, but today was a good day with only one slight mistake. When setting the gaps for the valves, wondered why exhaust #2 wasn't opening when I realised I was looking at #3!! At least I spotted it and corrected it. Not sure if I should be admitting to it!

Question re. seals/o-rings. In the pic below, I'm having trouble finding the two seals I'm pointing to. One is the water pump seal the other to the left of it is an o-ring(red arrow). That o-ring appears to be the same size as the one in the upper left(red arrow), but I'll be darned if I can find either of the rings I'm pointing. The upper left is on the "cylinder block" parts breakdown and looks to be #40, but the listing only calls for one. I also ordered #39 but it's somewhat smaller. In looking at the IPB, I don't see another #40 on the front of the block so can someone fill me in? I could probably reuse the water pump seal, not sure about the old o-ring although it does protrude well above the surface when in place. These are the only two things holding me up from installing the front engine cover, guess I'll move on to the rear cover and clutch for the time being. Just bugs me though....thought I had it covered with the first big order. :IDTS:

I think Randakks site has a diagram of the O-rings...1200,1100,1000 are the same I do believe. In the Honda parts fisch, you need to look up the engine block, transmission cover, and oil pump to find all the O-rings. I had all the PN's written down, and I can't find them.

I dug around on Randaak's site but didn't find the list Alwing spoke of. Doesn't mean it isn't there, I just didn't find it. I need to order the oil seal for the water pump(the larger item on the right I'm pointing at), but I still don't find it on the the IPB.

Take a look for a K/P front cover kit it comes with all the O-rings a gasket
and the shaft seal that you need for the water pump to the oil pump
