Very lucky so far. The bike clearly had been inside its entire life, and I put a drop of Kroil oil on about every screw and nut before attempting. We shall see if I get as lucky when removing the front cover. I have had trouble there before.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Tom, The gas tank needs work, but I think it will be ok. I will be getting out my Mr. Wizard contraption to de rust that bad boy. I have only cleaned up the outside of the carbs, but I think they will be fine too. What about your right hand starter switch. Does it have an on/off headlight switch?

Thanks Al. I love doing this! Tom, Why would any bike have an on/off headlight switch? Other than at start up, why would you want the headlight off? It looks more black in color than the other side which has kind of a purplish color. You wonder sometimes what has happened to these bikes over the last 35 years.

That top half not being faded like the bottom half, makes me think it's been replaced. The replacement must not have fit properly, so only the top half was replaced.

So far as the headlight switch, only models destined for North America (NA) did not have the headlight switch. The rest of the world (ROW) does. It may have been the only replacement control available was a rest of world style. Besides the headlight switch, internal wiring is also different, so only the top half was replaced. Some of the differences.

1. starter switch - NA also disconnects power to the headlight when pressed (ROW does not.)
2. headlight switch - NA not available (ROW in the OFF position also disconnects 1 leg of the stator.)
3. kill switch - same function on both

roncar, interesting! I did not even notice the difference until I tested the lights and the head light didn't work. I hit that switch and on it came. The high beam then was controlled by the left hand switch. I didn't notice anything different when I pulled the wiring harness apart. Kind of cool, but when would I want to turn it off, except at startup? I would be more afraid that I was riding and forgot to turn it on!

Could the switch be from another brand and not Honda?

No, I'm sure its a Honda switch. It fits perfectly and looks just like my 77 switch except for the on/off switch. Roncar's explanation sounds reasonable to me. My frame and motor numbers match US numbers. Do we have any LTD owners on the site with a non US bike?

Roncar is absolutely right. the on off for the headlight was also on the AU models, also on just about every other honda i have had. but..our little cb250
does nt . that is 2001 model.
my goldwing control has the seperate on off for headlight. i suspect it may have been a US requirement to have a constant headlight.
