I think I am going to try a soda blaster this time around. Hope it makes getting the engine paint ready easier than gasoline and wire brushes.

Well, a week or two has passed, it is now Sunday, (just in case anyone cares!) and the soda blaster arrived, along with a 60 lb bag of soda. I blasted the carb rack which had been previously overhauled by the PO. Looks a lot better but will need some polishing or painting at some point. I also spent a couple of hours blasting the engine. The soda blaster does a good job but it still takes a considerable amount of time. Looks like it snowed in my car port! Much better than doing this by hand though. Not much else to report. Played around with the starter, doesn't look too bad and was gummed up on the inside. Put the booster/charger on it and nothing happened so I don't know whether to invest in a rebuild kit or just bite the bullet and get a new one. I have never had much luck rebuilding electrical motors so I am inclined to buy the new one.

Got my new forks yesterday. They are from a '94 CB1000. Also got a set of calipers and MC to match. I wanted to try updating the brakes and front forks since they are probably the most antiquated parts on this bike. The calipers are 4-piston type with the pistons opposing one another, so I expect considerable improvement over stock. The 44mm fork legs should be much stiffer.

At this point I feel extremely lucky as the forks appear unused and with shipping the price was only $200.http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/posting.ph ... 30&t=46091# Calipers were from another source but seem fine and were reasonable also.

Bearings for the GL1000 and CB1000 are identical. Threads for lock nuts are also identical. What is different is the length of the stem. I am not a machinist but I believe the '75 steering stem can be cut out and machined down then inserted into the lower triple clamp of the CB without too much trouble. It will be a job for the lathe and probably a mill to clear the old stem without damaging the clamp.

Interestingly the 43mm CB forks are about 15mm closer together than the old fork legs. I am hoping to use spoke wheels on this bike but fitting up new rotors on the old spoke wheels may not be possible. A bridge to cross another time.

The '94 forks are a couple of inches longer than the originals. Since the handlebar clamps are removeable on this triple clamp, I am thinking I will slide the forks above the clamp and use clip-on style bars. They will be low but about the same height as straight drag bars. This should keep my steering geometry nearly identical to the original.

I am a bit stumped regarding wheels. I like spokes and wanted to use them on this build since it came with spokes. BUT somehow I will have to adapt the '94 front end for a spoke wheel of some sort. It takes a 1 inch axle and the originals from the '75 are in pretty poor shape. I think the disks will be too wide to fit anyway. Maybe a Harley front wheel with dual disks? I am thinking I would like 16 inch on the back and 18 on the front. This would mean lacing a new rim onto the back hub. Maybe powder coat them black.
Alternately, I can use an original '94 three spoke mag wheel with original disks. But then what to do with the back? Can't find a later model mag that is compatible with the three spoke front that will fit the final drive. I have a complete final drive, Comstar wheel and swing arm in decent shape from my '81 parts bike. It doesn't appear that it would be too difficult to modify the 75 frame to accept the later swing arm (??) and if both wheels were powder coated they probably wouldn't look too awkward together? There might be some other advantages to using the longer and slightly wider 81 swing arm? Or I could use a Comstar from a later year of GL1000 and skip the conversion.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

You are sort of in a spot that I was with my 77. I was thinking I wanted to run the Hayabusa front wheel, being I was running the Busa forks, but wanted something out back that matched relatively close.

I knew there wasn't a rim that matched that would bolt up without modification, so I opted to at least have both wheels be mags...the Lester rear rim all but disappears out back with it powder coated all black. I didn't want to have a spoked wheel on one end, and a mag on the other.

Have you tried putting the spoked rim on the new forks? As long as it fits, there is undoubtedly a way to adapt it to fit so it is secure....and goes round. :lol:

Edit: I see after re-reading that you have CB forks...Where as the link I provided are for CBR forks. Slightly different animal. Hopefully it will give a little benefit to the problem you are facing.

Thanks, I noticed the handle bars wouldn't turn very far with those stops on the bottom triple clamp! I had the machinist take them off with the mill. Plan to drill and place new stops of 3/16 round stock.

I got the new head bearings today and when I get the triple clamps back, I will be able to take some more accurate measurements but I wanted to use the CB triple clamps (they look nice in shiny aluminum) and they came with the forks so there was no extra cost for 1200 triple clamps. For better or worse, they place the fork legs closer together so I don't think the '77 wheel can be made to work. At least not with the stock rotors. Additionally there is the issue of the larger axle. I am thinking that some of the Harley wire wheels are narrower at the hub and also offer more options for rotors and are available with one inch axle. As you say, spacers can always be machined to fill up space.
