Rear footrests should be black not chrome
Wrong cap on front master cylinder.
Looks like the wrong shape grips too.
And since I have tried it many times I know how hard it is to photograph the candy blue/green, but that colour looks wrong; too blue.

Should we email the auction house with all this?
I'd say the restoration service took a lot of liberty... :IDTS:

Tank stripes changed on the early early ones so they may be correct.

It does say "pre-production" and it was used by a school. Either of those could account for any number of differences, and it only says that the restorer "refreshed" it.

I read years ago that Honda Canada had found a low numbered 'Wing under a tarp behind a bunch of stuff when they were re-organizing part of their warehouse their warehouse. Since it had come in as a pre-production sample for shows & photography it couldn't be sold for use on the road so they offered it to the Honda Museum. I can't remember whether it was 001 or 002.

I find the story associated with the bike from Idaho pretty suspect, though. Soichiro Honda was "the teacher's" fishing buddy? Possible, but not very likely unless the teacher traveled to Japan regularly.

Its well known that Mr. Honda built his first motorcycle (a bicycle with a war surplus motor) as transportation to where he liked to fish...

But by the '70s he was probably too busy to fish too far from home.

The whole story is extremely fishy. I don't believe the fishing story for one minute, and having had personal experience of what sort of damage 'school' or technical college pupils can inflict on one of these engines I would run a mile from this mess.

If it really is 002 it will end up in the hands of a collector. If it really is a pre-production model and duty wasn't paid for on road use it will never be driven so it doesn't matter if the students messed it up.

Pretty sure it is legit. Communicated some with Pete and he was aware of this bike and it's history has been verified.

0002 is a piece of Honda history. Since it appears not to be in 'original' condition I would hope it goes to an owner who makes sure the errors are corrected. However, as a 'pre-production' unit who really knows how it actually left the factory?? I guess one could make it as close as possible to an early production 75. It will be most interesting to see where the bike ends up.
