I spent the weekend plugging and blanking off holes, covering threads with scrap rubber tubing and general prepping for the powder coaters.. Delivered them to P/C's this morning and this arvo "refurbished" front shocks including fitting a 35mm spacer to lower the frontend..

That's a good amount. You may need to take a little off of the spring. The caps will be a bit hard to put on. Unless you use old worn out stock springs.

Had a bit of a shock while dismantling one of two sets (pairs) as a PO had "valve springs" added... (the allen key will turn up eventually) Made up a good set from them...
I put 30 mm in my #1 project and found it OK to palm push cap back on.. This 35mm was a bit harder but doable..

Yes, I put new Progressive's in mine. Lowered the forks about 3/4" internally. The cap is pretty hard to get on. The ride is way too stiff for some people.olchris wrote:snip... Old worn springs![]()

I was cleaning down the motor for paint and found a "headless" bolt, so off came the lower casing to find a nice new water pump and the stud was easy to get out... IMO sometime its feels good to "open up" parts like the front casing and look and assess. Found a little bit of crud, same with the oil stainer, put a new oring in neutral switch. But otherwise seal it bak up and paint,,

They asked whether i pay cash or card and i replied "the cheapest" so Au$300 an i couldnt be more happy... The frame, side stand and shelter frame are "Gunmetal Kinetic" almost same as what i knew "gunmetal grey" was years ago..... Leaves me plenty of options what to paint the panels and gaurds.

Its a bit of a bugger that i have to cut all the wire off

Man... You got a great deal on the P.C. job. I looked it up and $300 Au comes out to $233 US. I wouldn't mind cutting off a few wires if I could get all that done for that price.

I have already spent several thousand $$ there over the years (cash)!! But old bikes and machinery seem to always "bite" you when your not expecting it and you pour $$$$ into other places not expected. I did a bit of painting today with some silver "leftovers" i found in the cupboard... I used rattle can Etch primer (in the cupboard as well) first, then splashed some 2pak silver-ish and some clear also from the cupboard just because it was there

Also did some "bits" which got some rattle can etch primer and "charcoal" hammer tone rattlecan.. I hate rattle cans and their finish but with these smaller bits it not that much of a big deal..

Hopefully will be able to bolt the frame to the engine in a few days and go from there!

The paint has had enough time to cure and found its way to the lift... I put those few painted bits on also the carbs, of course all "bolts" were replaced with new zinc allen bolts with a squirt of chain oil in holes and a dob of neverseize to bolts... I found a few left over rolls of pin-stripping tape in the cupboard from a previous project and used it... I like it ATM and will use again..

I was not real sure about using the "logo" on the rocker covers but after applying stripes it hard not too have to use that space.... I like them but in my head they this one thing, have to be "perfect" original examples of the right colour to suit... I have 6 of them but all were "abused" with dents, scratched and gouges from 40 yrs of service.... I took my only option and give the best two a coat of hammertone to cover all the scars.. Im sure they will blend in to the big picture and look fine...

I am really digging this project. I love the stance and now the attention to detail. I agonized over the valve cover emblems, too. In the end, just freshened the paint and returned mine to "stock" appearance. You've made me rethink that. In fact, you've made me rethink a couple of things...

I had a lot of trouble getting the head stock bearings removed for the powder coater... In hindsight, not sure why i did !!, i should have just left them in there and spent extra time sealing up the headstock. two nice big flat washers and a length of threaded bars would have done it.. As you may be aware the bearing are almost flush to there "keeper" recess and i suppose there is a magic tool out the that removes them but i dont have one.... Anyway the next guy will be happy as i always grind two small "divits" at 180 opposite each other top and bottom so a punch can be used effictively....

Frame now on the engine with all the mating surfaces back to bare metal for electrical contact, flow
stuff!! Im terrified of electrics and wiring so im thinking of it as from now!

I managed to get the swingarm, pumkin and tank in today and noticed that this swing arm (10/75?? has a grease nipple in it and inside had a plastic collar to maybe divert grease to the shaft... my #1 Gwing (04/75) did not and seems strange to me that Honda would change as they went along.... I cant say 100% that the Swing arm is original but it look like an original part... a grease nipple is a good thing but its fairly ineffective the way it distibutes grease.. It a bit like throwing grease at a spinning uni joint... very oddd!

I was lucky when this #2 wing came along as it had "rubbers" on the swing arm pivets, top of forks and centre stem... I immediately stole them and put them on #1 wing so now derrrrrh i dont have any for this project...... Is there a source of a copycat rubber item that is commonly used to replace original . As described those 3 locations need replacing and im also going to need the rubber supports for the side covers.. Im not real fussed about original looks but would be nice to cover and protect from elements!

Honda added the zerk fitting. my 78 had one from the factory. the shaft end collar changed throughout the years, as did the seal. All in all, it does do a good job of greasing those splines. The ones mostly missed are the splines at the rear wheel and the ones where the shaft meets the engine drive
