Re: I'm a newbie
When I got the bike the exhaust hanging bracket from the frame to the muffler on the left side was missing and the right side was not bolted to the frame. I found the left bracket at a junk yard and picked up some needed hardware. Took both brackets off, painted them and today I reinstalled them and tightened everything up. I have finished the front fender, it was painful to get it smooth and sanded properly. After a few weeks of working on it when I had a chance it is now on the bike. Today, I installed the new choke cable. The guy I bought the bike from called and said he found the small triangle cable holder piece that mounts to the underside of the of the clutch lever control. Fixed the tachometer cable. I had already buffed out the left valve cover and today did the right one, they look good. The timing belt covers are off. WOW were they nasty. It took a wire wheel to get the grim off. Then I used a "ball" made of scotch bright on a high speed rotary tool to clean them further. Then came a buffing wheel and some medium cut compound. Now that the covers are ready The timing belt replacement is next.

Re: I'm a newbie
Well its been awhile since I posted but things are still progressing. The forks have new seals, dust covers and oil. The front wheel has new bearings, seals and a new tire. The main section of the tank shelter is done. The front of the motor is all back on with new timing belts. Next is the doors on the tank shelter and the removal of the rear wheel for new bearings and a tire.

Re: I'm a newbie
Spent some quality time with the Wing this weekend. The rear wheel has a new Dunlop wrapped around it and new bearings in it. I installed the rear end using the Honda moly 77 assembly lube on the splines. Then rebuilt the rear master cylinder, front master cylinder, left front caliper and right front caliper. All cleaned up with new seals and fresh EBC brake pads. The rear caliper is next for a rebuild. Did an oil change and I purchased some rust remover to soak in the gas tank. I had to convert the right horn from the round style connector to 1/4 male spade connector but a bit of soldering and its all working. I found a left side chrome low horn on ebay and it should be here soon. A quick connector conversion and that will be all electrical complete. When I bought the bike in the end of May it was my hope to have it done by Labor day. There is a real possibility that it might really happen.
There are a few things that I still need if anyone here can help.
I need a side cover GoldWing emblem as well as the big emblem on the top door of the tank shelter.
Thanks all,

Re: I'm a newbie
Well, it is starting to look good. I rebuilt the rear caliper and put in fresh EBC pads. After soaking the gas tank for 24 hours with a rust remover I spent about 2 hours with a pressure washer cleaning the inside of the tank through both the filler and the level sender ports. Spray 1600psi water then suck it out and repeat. I worked well. Compressed air to blow it dry and put in the gas. I wish I could say more good things. After putting it together it ran for about 30 seconds and then put a valve through a piston.... I am not happy. This was the first time that I tried to start the engine. I confirmed the cam/crank timing positions were right. I ran the motor on the starter only with the run/stop switch off for about 30 seconds to build oil pressure and no noises.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the 80-82 intake valves and the 83 valve. They are NOT the same part number. The 80-82 is 14711-371-000 38.00mm head diameter, 6.5mm stem diameter and 102.3mm length. The 83 is 14744-MB9-780 and I can NOT find any info on it. I got a new rod/piston assembly and someone gave me a head that has a bad valve in it.
I am still thinking of fixing this thing but may just part it out. I am not sure yet... I really wanted to ride it.

Might be a little more money to just buy a good engine, but might not be?

bummer about ..whatever went down but plenty of cheap parts out there even for worse case scenarios,
pretty strange and highly unusual failure scenario,
if at some point a cheap motor comes into the pix, fire away about (???) it prior to decision making,
83 is a one year only engine mainly having to do with gearing, ran the lowest RPMs up to that point, 82 is not far off, 80-1 spin faster,
bike looks real good and wouldn't fret over the bad luck hickup, doing your own work trumps (big time) any glithes that may rear up on these bikes, inluding worse case scenarios
going 1200 is not a huge deal, 1000 engines are geared for a ~ 3.4 rear, 1100s are ~ 3.0,
if it comes up, 1000 heads or cams offer some big pluses, cams in particular easely swap over

Re: I'm a newbie
Well after all of these years, I finally got to ride the bike. I put in a new rod/piston did a valve job on both heads and put it back together. Then the tank had a leak. Found a good used tank, cleaned it with 5 gallons of vinegar and installed it. After putting it all back together, I took it to a shop to have the carbs rebuilt and synchronized. Got it back yesterday and went for a small ride. It has been about 20 years since I been on a bike but I can still make it work. Doing a few touch ups and getting plates and insurance this week. I hope to have a summer of worry free riding. Wish me luck!

Re: I'm a newbie
Well it has been a few years and the 83 has been fun to ride. After getting all fixed up I rode for 1 summer. I HATED the brakes. The first winter project was to eliminate the cross link system with 82 parts. The right front caliper, line splitter, front master cylinder and rear master cylinder are all 82. Rebuilt the parts and added Galfer stainless steel lines. Rode another full summer without issue. Replaced the horns with the Moto Dual horns. MUCH louder and easy to mount on each side stock locations. Finally, just for the looks of it I replaced the front fender with one off of a 85 VT1100. After make new mounts and a polished aluminum rear extension to make sure nothing came up and hit the radiator, I like the look.
