I have kept my old bearing shells just for the maybe one day someone can re-plate them. I am sure that would be a cheaper answer than grinding cranks and line boring cases and big ends.
I guess the answer is getting the numbers up to make the job worth it.
A guy I knew in Melbourne used to cast his own mains and big end bearings, then line-bore them out to size. He passed away several years back now, and took his knowledge and skills with him.
