Re: Exhaust Stud Removal
There's a shop that rebuilt several of my Camaro starters that my headers cooked through the years. I may pay him a visit.

Re: Exhaust Stud Removal
If the post turns it may be possible to repair but I believe for it to be a long term fix it needs to be silversoldered and not just soldered with tin/lead 50/50. This would be the field coil connection and is pretty high current. I believe You can see the back of the stud when the brush plate is removed. I also bought OE brushes for My 84 a yer ago but they are a little pricy but worth it.

Re: Exhaust Stud Removal
As I remember OEM is about $30 for the brushes. Yes that is very high for a pair of $5 brushes but you in effect get a rebuilt starter for $30. I have always used OEM. But I realize that they are just motor brushes and a shop with even a small inventory of brushes should have a pair that will work.

Re: Exhaust Stud Removal
OE is likely best. Starter brushes are a very different material from drill motor brushes to handle the high current without damaging the commutator or brushes. but a re-builder could possibly have something suitable.
