I would think that as long as one belt was intac, the side would be alright. Besides, not likely that the pistons on the bad side would make more then one revolution

I meant the piston on the same side. In the pics the one looked pretty fair considering.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I'm sticking to my statement that a new spark plug and good to go. Might benefit from a can of engine restore too.

If only one belt broke it would not take out the other side. That side would remain in time.

You have to agree it took a few more than one crankshaft revolution to pound the living snot out of that #1 piston and cylinder bore.
Whether the camshaft is turning or not, as long as the crankshaft assembly is still rotating, its connecting rods keeps punching their respective pistons towards, and away, from Top Dead Center.

The broken valve top did an awesome job destroying that engine. tumb2

That engine damage witness photo combination ought to be the poster child for changing timing belts? :oldies

I have seen that kind of damage in air cooled VW engines when they drop a valve. Usually when valve adjustment is too tight and valve fails at stem near valve head itself.

The only thing in this case, is that the belts were new and fine.
PO had the firing of the plugs so messed up I don't think he got it started at all.
The single carb installed was totally full of black soot from the back fire.
Just can't figure out why he didn't stop cranking it with the sound it must have made. :IDTS:

Feel free to use the pictures though anim-cheers1

I'm pretty sure what happened, and the PO isn't admitting it, is that he dropped a belt. Then someone put a new belt on, maybe both belts, but that damage happened long before the belt change. No I'm sure with that plug smashed 1&2 plugs were not firing. But where is the rest of that valve? It has to be inside your crankcase or at least big chunks of it.

Personally I wouldn't spend any more time on that engine. Scrap or spare parts I'm thinking.

Yeah, spare engine parts.
It will be a year or more before I get around to bringing this one back to life.

The title is now in my name (rare for me) but the seller insisted that I signed the old title, and it will be great to save another one.
Too many irons in the fire for now.
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

I agree that few of my bikes have the title in my name. Only have the title in my name for the bikes I want to keep for a while and ride. But I understand why he wanted it that way. When I sell one I usually make a copy of the buyers drivers license and a copy of the bill of sale. That way I can show who I sold it to in case something happens and it points back to me. I only sell bikes registered in my name FYI.
