Front Brakes

Bit of a setback with the master. Looks good and builds enough pressure to push the pistons as it should. Then I noticed there is no hole to mount the mirror. I decided to fabricate a bracket by using a old master I had in the junk pile. Lots of cutting and grinding and I think it is ready to test fit. Not the prettiest thing yet but coming along. I'll try to remember to get a picture of it soon. Only had a little time at the workbench today after getting home from a full day.

I had an interesting variation on this problem yesterday.
Some (long) time back I refurbished a set of 1100 dual puck brakes for the 79 that has been sitting for a VERY long time waiting for me to get around to it.
Short version. New master cylinder, custom set of stainless lines and these calipers bolted up. Could not get fluid past the caliper banjos. The newly? rebuilt caliper pistons are stuck solid, real solid! I still haven't got them out yet as my grease gun has gone awol.
I can only think that when I fitted the pistons, I must have used brake fluid to lube things and it has crystallised.

Using a grease is effective but messy.

This is far from perfect but I think it will work. It moves the lever about half an inch but that doesn't seem to hurt any. Maybe tomorrow I can get it mounted. For now I'm waiting for the paint to dry.

Be careful using a grease gun to disassemble a caliper as grease is a mineral based product and will destroy brake fluid seals,, even a small amount of contact will cause brake fluid rubber to swell and start to disintegrate.

Personally I do not reuse any b-fluid rubber that has had any contact with a mineral based oil or grease as any contact will start the process of the seals swelling into donuts, that will lock things up initially and eventually the rubber will disintegrate and fail, usually at the worst time when needed. Imperative that everything is clean of any mineral oil/grease. A must do thing.

I only use the grease gun if the pistons are really stuck. It takes a lot of cleaning to get all that out when you are done.

I keep an old master cylinder for getting caliper pistons unstuck that and save used brake fluid to use with it. I have a bolt that fits the inlet of a caliper that I installed a zerk fitting in but I think I've only used it once when the master cylinder didn't budge them.

I've used both ways to get the pistons out. An old master is effective unless they are really stuck and then I use grease.

Hmmmmm......didn't think of the old m/c trick. I might try that tomorrow, but I have severe doubts that it will get them out. I picked up a new grease gun today; 10000psi should move them!!! New seals ordered too. And for the rear which is probably the same since they were all done at the same time.
