GL1100 motor will only shift into 1st and Neutral

So what I ended up doing is taking the gears out of my old 1000 block with a bad piston. I used gl1000 shafts, drum, and all gears except 5th (gl1000 5th is bigger and wouldn’t go thru hole on front of the engine). Should’ve noticed the clutch shaft is different on the 1000, so had to use 1000 clutch since I only noticed after cases put together. Also used gl1000 primary drive gear that goes on driveshaft. I was turning the engine on the bench and was able to move the shift drum into all gear positions now.

I sort of recall something the front cover gasket being to thin causing a shifting problem on one of the Goldwing's. My not be relevant, but it just popped into my head

Cyborg is correct, years ago I changed the water pump and just cheaped out because money was tight at that time so instead of buying a gasket kit I just RTV’D things back together,,, it was a mistake !

Had to take it all back apart, clean it up and put it back together with the proper gaskets. Lesson learned as they say.

A quick question I had, is there any potential issue with me having put the GL1100 5th gear in with the rest all being gl1000 gears? it seemed to mesh up okay but I'm not a transmission expert by any means. I do hope it works as its a higher gear and the gl1000 would benefit from more of an overdrive imho. Didn't have much choice as the larger GL1000 5th gear wouldn't fit through the hole in the front of the gl1100 engine for final assembly.

Hmm, it’ll be a first perhaps excited to test this GL1000/1100 frankenengine with new gears

My only complaint with the gl1100 block in the 1000 frame initially was it revved around 5000 on the highway, not bad, but kinda high. Even with the original 1000 engine I always found myself clicking the shifter into non-existent 6th gear. If the switch from the 1000’s .939 gear to the 1100’s .909 gear works I wonder how much of a difference that’d make.

.909 divided by .939 will be the percentage of change. Output speed will be 96.8% of the previous gearset. 1000 rpm goes to 968.

Ah, so maybe 150 less Rpms at highway speed, not a big difference I suppose
