In my head is the "feel" of the perfect bike for me and the parts that go into it. I've had alot of nice bikes and bikes that were good for me. I have yet to assemble all the "perfect" parts on the same bike, though! In my head, though, are laced wheels. I use them and maintain my bike such that it hasn't been an issue.

I have allergies to mags, billet, tassles, bells, bright colors and brand names on my bikes.

I forgive the GL1200 for its mag wheels and continue to lust.

Alloy wheel.
Or cast wheel

But Comstars are what Scott was talking about at the beginning of this thread. Comstars are a built up wheel so they are neither cast nor magnesium.

Arrrrgh!!!!!

Comstars aren't mags, with or without rivets. They aren't cast either. Go look at one and you will see what I mean. Until then you won't be able to get it.

Comstars are built up wheels with cast alloy rims & hubs and pressed steel spokes - they are NOT "mags" because they contain no MAGNESIUM.

Comstars were a superior design because they flex like wire spoked wheels but since their rims have no spoke holes they can be used with tubeless tires.
The flexing was an important feature because cracked spokes were common in early cast wheels that other manufacturers were using. Honda didn't use the cheaper (&, IMHO, less attractive) cast wheels until they were sure they could get ones that wouldn't crack.

The rims on Comstars are not cast. They are rolled and welded extrusions. I believe the "spokes" are aluminum too.

BMW has some very nice cast wheels. They never crack because they are forged after casting. Too expensive for Japanese manufacturers to do.

O.K., I just replaced all the rivets in my Comstars with Magnesium.

From you I would believe that........

I thought the rear suspension of my GL1000 sidecar outfit was squeaking so I leaned across the bike to have a closer look. I discovered 6 broken spokes! I called a buddy that worked for a Honda dealer to see if he could get me a few spokes and he told me that they were only available in sets and I would need to have a pro lace it up. He recommended I phone around to all the wreckers to see if I could find a COmstar instead.

But they all have spokes. Comstars have pressed steel spokes and cast wheels have spokes cast into them.

Now, disc wheels are another matter....

BTW: Wire spoked wheels work by tension - the spokes on the top bear the weight.
Cast, Comstar and even wooden wagon wheels (& their derivatives that were used on early motor vehicles) work in compression - the spokes on the bottom bear the weight.

I've heard that compression of a spinal disc is a bad thing. They used to make those swing thingies that hung you upside down to put tension on your spine,s'posed to be a good thing?

Arrrrgh! They're not "swing thingies", they're Swang Thangs. Swing thingies work by tenspression. Swang Thangs work by gremlins in the material acting in past tense to clean and whiten the tolerances which have to be set to "stun".
