Met up with Paul in Gettysburg for lunch. It was great seeing his bike in person. From what he started with the bike has gone through an amazing transformation. Good work and perseverance has paid off.

Good job Paul. Look out rally, here we come

Roncar and robin1731 were right - 7V Regulator was shot! I swapped it for my spare and looky there! Temp stays right about the middle range! Gas gauge dropped down to about 1/4 tank! Good call on the regulator! You guys get 1 Attaboy from me!

Ordered new shocks today. Once those are in and I make some more adjustment to the handle bars this puppy is finished!

But it is alright with us if you think it is finished for about a week. After that, you will agree with Sagebrush.

good point, as long as it is running well then it is done until the pocket cash generates enough heat to burn that hole.

Or, until she lets you know what she needs.

I'm doing a starter rebuild this week after riding 7k miles. It's always something.

Well, it's been some time since I've posted anything about my project.
While it's mostly complete, there are a few nagging things that need "adjusted"

My biggest problem has been with the transmission. Shifting up through the gears was anything but smooth. It almost never shifted right into the next higher gear - it felt as though it was fighting me the whole way.

I had some questions about it but was never able to find a difinitive answers. Mostly, my question stems around the wide-tanged friction disk. The new clutch kit I purchased from MacCycles came with 8 identical disks. (I'm talking about the ones with the cork on them.) I had questioned them as to why I didn't receive 7 of the same width and one of a wider width. Their reply is that it wasn't needed and that even Barnett was supplying clutches this way - all 8 disks of the same tang width. I had posted a question about this here but I think people got it confused with the damper plate.

Anyway, against my better judgement, I continued with the install. So, I've been having this difficult shifting problem and finally decided to try to remedy the problem and yesterday I pulled the clutch.

Now with the clutch out I notice that the disks furthest from the engine seem to be bathed very nicely in oil. However, the last two disks (closest to the engine) seemed to have not been getting any additional oil. They looked like they did when I installed them. (Yes, I had soaked them in oil for about a week prior to installation.) They just seemed a little dry to me, not nearly as oily as the ones on the opposite side of the assembly.

I decided I would use my old clutch instead of the new ones from MacCycle. I put it all back together and took it out for a test ride. So far the results were very promising. I'll have to take it for a much longer ride to really work it out and see if it's acutally working properly now. But all indications are that it is.

So, I then am left with two rhetorical questions... Why did the back disks look like they were not receiving oil (all the holes in the center clutch hub were open, not blocked in the least) and is the clutch now functioning properly due to the wide-tanged disk or is it something in the makeup of the MacCycle disks preventing it from working correctly.

Anyway, I really hope my problem is fixed. While it was not difficult to get the clutch out and in, I must acree with Octane's assesment that a lift is really handing in doing so. All that rolling around on my carport have left me with some bruises on my hips and ribs. So, I'm paying for it a little bit today.

Alright, that's the clutch issue. Additionaly, I was missing two more hoses which I purchased yesterday. One is the spooge collection hose which comes from the air cleaner. I purchased enough to replace the hose from the crankcase up to the air cleaner and then from the air cleaner to the collection device.

The other hose is for the gas overflow. While this isn't needed it sure does help out when trying to fill the tank. I haven't overflowed yet but I know it's coming and when it does I want the gas to go anywhere but over my engine.

Additional notes:
- Checked the spark plugs. Looks like the engine is running perfectly. There's nothing abnormal with any of them.

- Cold morning starts suck as I have to hold the throttle open until the engine warms enought to keep going on its own. Having that broken stud on the plenum along with the missing throttle lock linkage is a small pain.

On the steel wool subject. I just bought a set of Sportster pipes that have the crossover. I notice they use a stainless steel wool around the joints to help seal and reduce leaks. I looked for some yesterday and no one knew what I was talking about, but I just found it online. It might be better??? for cleaning when combining soap and water and the like. It is bull dog steel wool. Anyone use it around exhaust connections?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

The color used for this bike is... drum roll please....

Krylon RTA 9211 Sun Yellow Rust Tough Enamel! dancr

Since it says it "ELIMINATES RUST" I thought it would be perfect for such an old bike! God knows there's plenty of rust on there!

I put on about 5 coats and wet sanded in between each coat. Finally I had buffed the whole thing with a glazing compound and added the pin striping.

HEHE, Hey Neil! Long Time no see!

Yeah, I'm putting around the house at the moment. Got Laid off on Tuesday. It's been a long time coming! I've been dodging the bullet for about 3 years now. Another reason why my Anxiety has been way out of whack. So, now I'm just sitting at home, submitting resumes. Well, actually I've only submitted one, but there's always tomorrow!!! Why do today what I can put off until tomorrow!?

Where you hanging out? Did you ever move? If not, let's hook up for lunch one weekend! You still got my number?

Also, if you didn't see it yet - I'm sure you will by now, I'm selling my beautiful yellow wing! crying1 Mostly because of the size/weight issue with my leg. Also, just for the money. Next thing to go is going to be the truck. I've put about 35K on it in about 10 years! We sold our van and bought a station wagon. Next thing to do is get a trailer hitch so the truck won't be used at all.

I've still got the Rebel 450 though! I'll hold on to it for a while longer while I try to figure out what my next wing project is going to be!

Oh no, so sad Paul. We have missed you and now you drop this on us. Now the Rebel 450 is cool and all, but a GL it is not. I do hope you leg is getting stronger again...
