I started dis-assembly and cleaning of both sets of carbs yesterday. It seems like it is one thing after another with the 76 set. One puck is in so tight that I broke off an easy out trying to get it out. I'll just keep fighting with it. The 77 set looks to be in real good shape. I still have one puck to remove, but otherwise its all good. Nothing appears to be broken and they cleaned up very nicely. I'll keep posting with progress. Hopefully one of these sets will work.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Carb work continues. I am concentrating on the 77 set. They are in much better shape. The only problem I had was one stubborn puck. No way it was coming out! I tried everything and finally it met its match in the drill press.

Well, that is one set of field dressed carbs. At least you will understand the differences between the 1976 and 1977 carbs.

77 carbs are coming around great. However, one of the plastic tops is broken. I have seen the thread about repairing the with a nickel. I do not have a lathe etc. Can I replace the broken top with one of the 76 tops? are they the same? (76 vs 77) If I do this should I replace the cap and piston as a unit? As Roseann Rosannadanna used to say " . . . . its always something ". (That's the way it was when SNL used to be funny!)

Why not just use JB Weld on the underside to seal it and let the appearance on the top side stay the same. I guess you could use a nickle on the underside if you need the support.

I have been working on the carbs this weekend. I used one of the caps and CV pistons from the 76 set to replace the broken one. As I disassembled the 76 set, I found two things that could have been problems. I believe that there could have been two places where there was a vacuum leak. First of all, one of the caps was cracked. As I re cleaned everything with compressed air it was evident that cap was bad. I also was suspicious of one of the intake manifolds. It may have been leaking. Otherwise the internals of the carb looked good. No clogs or anything were evident. Anyway, since the 77 set looked better, I decided to finish those. I took it slow, was meticulous and followed the Randak video step by step. I was very confident in this rebuild. Everything fit well and moved as it should. I put the carbs on the bike with great confidence. The bike started right up, but I still can not get it to idle! Before I had leaks in two of the bowls. Those are gone, but the idle problem with the bike is about the same. So lets think about this. The carbs are different and I believe have a good rebuild. So what is the same? Three of the manifolds are the same. The throttle cables are the same. Two of the caps and CV pistons are the same. I'm not sure what other common elements I have. I truly believe that the ignition system is good. Not sure what to try now. Any help would be great. I have a fair amount of patience, but it is beginning to waver. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Ernie

Well the builder is the same... What do the plugs look like, and if you disconnect plugs one at a time, do you get any difference between the cylinders. Seems like if one is leaking, then you should get a clue when that spark goes away. Otherwise, is the linkage between carbs the same?

Fred, I thought about the builder being the same, but unless I go Cybil here, I'm stuck. Anyway, linkage between carbs is different and seems to work well. I definitely have throttle cable problems. I have not been able to get it to snap back. I will work on that. I have not tried the plugs yet. I did spray the engine with carb cleaner to see if I may have a vacuum leak. No rpm change while doing that. I will figure this out!

Well, if the throttle cable does not snap back with either set, then that is a clue. Glad to hear the linkage is different, as that is a culprit and now it can be discounted. Next up I think the plugs, and the throttle cable, in no particular order.

Fred, I pulled the plugs this morning. Remember that I did not clean them off after the problems that I had before. My untrained eye says that 1, 2 and 4 look like they should. They are developing a white/brown burn color. Number three is not the same color. It is black. It did not look terrible, but a bit oily. It is upper left in top photo and second from left in second photo. Not sure what this means. Here are the best pictures that I could get:

Lets talk throttle cables. I am not sure that they are causing my idle problems but they are definitely a problem. I replaced one of the cables on the bike with a spare that I got along with the bike. I am pretty sure the replacement is from a 77. When I look at the Honda parts fisch, 75 and 76 are the same but 77 and later are different. Does anyone know what is the difference? I see crescent sells replacements that are not year specific and supposedly fit 75 thru 79, while on ebay sellers are year specific with 75 to 76 and 77 to 79. I have a good set of spares from a 77, but if they make a difference I'll get some for 76. I never really got a good snap on the throttle with either set of carbs with the cables that are on the bike. (probably a 76 and a 77) What do you think?

Honda raised the handle bar up in 1977, so throttle cables in '77 are longer if nothing else.

Holy push cables Batman, why didn't I think of that one! When I installed the cables, one was too short to route over the cross bar under the false tank. I forgot that I left the 77 bars on my 76 bike! Maybe this could explain my problems. Stay tuned to this same Bat channel! ( I'll save POW BIFF and KABOOM for another post)
