Wow, reviving my own dead thread. Appears the last post here was Aug of 2012!

Time for an update!

So, back a couple of years now i was worried about the engine needing to be rebuilt because of oil consumption and lacking power.

I fought with the carbs, trying to sync and adjust them, and got nowhere. Then I fought with the ignition.

This I believe is where my problem lied. When I purchased the bike, it had a Dyna ignition system on it. When trying to time it I could never get it right. The timing marks would appear to bounce, and I could never dial it in, but it would run better/worse. So I dealt with it for awhile but rarely rode it.

Finally last fall I decided I wanted to fix it. So the first thing I did was throw out the Dyna system and go back to points. Turns out, after pulling off the Dyna system, I removed the advancer (which I had pervious replace/cleaned) and the advancer weights were completely stuck. This thing had rusted/corroded/fused itself tight. So I bought a new one and replaced it, as well as found the cam the points followers ride on, and put on a new points plate and condensers.

Now the Wing runs happily! Starts right up and feels good. No smoke or anything. I couldn’t be happier with this bike and the way it turned out.

Unfortunately, I just don’t ride it enough as I have 2 other daily riders at this point and a new project I’m working on, so it sits quietly against the wall. So this spring I am putting it up for sale (but if it doesn’t sell quickly I won’t be too disappointed).

Anyways, here are some pictures of the LTD in its current state. Since the last post I’ve had it professionally painted. I worked with paint shop to match the original paint as close as possible (did exhaustive research trying to find any paint mixture from Honda or other paint suppliers). The only original paint on the bike was the back of the side cover so it was matched with a scanner, then compared to an original LTD for damn near an exact match. It looks phenomenal.

Thanks guys,

Dave

Dave, overall the bike looks great! You'll have to share with the rest of the LTD world what chemistry was involved in the color match as from the pics it looks...spot on! Great job on the bike!

I second that request!

Just read entire thread, almost like a very short novel. The posts, the comments, and
all the work and money you put into your LTD. I think anyone would be proud to own
that bike. It's too bad it doesn't fit in your family, but I'm sure you will find a new home
in short order.
