I have just put a little grease on the bolts myself.... fortunately I have only had to do a head job a couple of times, and the second time was not on the first job I did

I'll go along with the oil recommendation. Cheaper than anti-seize. ;)

Thanks for all the great recomendations. I am using OEM Honda head gaskets, at least that's what I hope Western Honda sent me. It sound as though oil is OK on the bolts and that seems to be the easiest way for me to go.

I did start working on the covers. I managed to get them sanded and got the pin stripes off. Got to hand it to Honda for getting them on there really really good. Took a ton of sanding to get them off. Painting is not my strong suit but I've decided to give it a try. I'm sure I will be back here asking for advice on how to make them look good.

The PO had glued the emblems on some of the covers, that took a bit of sanding to get down too!

Easy enough to tell if you get OEM head gaskets. They come packaged individually with a piece of carrboard to protect them. And of course they they will have a Honda part number and tag in the package too.

And make sure you check out shoptalk. Honda updated the torque that the head bolts should be tightened to. Few if any of the manuals have the correct numbers.
Robin, can you point me to the thread with the updated torque specs for the head bolts? I read through all the head threads in shop talk but didn't see it.
Thanks,
Jeff

If the threads are not dry you should adjust your torque values. I like anti-seize, parts come off well a decade later.

Here is some info:

Torque values as follows:
Dry = 100 %
Lubed (light oil e.g. SAE 10) = -10%
Graphitepaste (Never Seize) = -30%

I am assuming Never Seize and Anti-seize would be the same. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Some more info: http://www.mzind.com/M_Z_Suggested_Assembly.pdf

Whether right or wrong, I use anti-seize and only reduce 10% or a bit less on head bolts.

But the Honda torque numbers are with oil, not dry. So your "lubed" number should not be -10%.

I stand corrected. I reduce my torque value on head bolts by 10% rather than 30% since I use anti-seize. I still figure I am just a hair over-torqued, but not enough to cause any damage. Maybe I should lighten up another 10%.

Sounds about right Marc, I would not lighten up further. I cannot beleive that anti-seize would allow the bolt to turn that much farther to allow a -20 from oiled.

I got the new heads and the exhaust back on the bike this weekend. I wanted to get the exhaust back on so I can start working on a mounting system for my saddlebags. I went into the shop tonight with an idea and this is what I put together.
Image

My plan is to use this as a pattern and take it to a fab shop to have a solid one piece frame made out of 3/16 steel. I'll have that powdercoated.

I tried to match the angle of the frame with the rack
Image

The bags should sit about here when it's all done.
Image

Here's a rear view. They sit out a bit but it's as close as I can get them.
Image

Keep in mind that this is only the prototype. It seems fairly solid as it is but I want the final version to be really solid with very little wiggle at the back end.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

to take the wiggle out of the back end it really has to be attached to something. HD touring bikes do this to the rear fender (which comes low in the back). Vetter bags do this with a cross over to the other side

That bag looks great with the color of the bike.
