That amount of rust as an indicator of the rest of the engine's condition is not good! I would take a hard look in every single orifice I could with a good flashlight before I made a decision but at this point ya gotta wonder what the rest of the guts look like. :(

Whiskerfish, Believe me, I share your concern! I will do some more checking, but unless I find signs of any more problems I'm going to put it back together and KEEP MY FINGERS CROSSED! The up side is that at least I know how to pull the engine if I have to. I did have compression on each cylinder. The pistons moved freely. We shall see. As for the shocks etc, I have buffed and polished everything. I guess I'll just try to keep it that way to keep the rust at bay. If not, maybe I would have a reason to move to Arizona. The way I figure it, if I have to replace some of these things later, I'm not out a thing. I have enjoyed my time working on the bike, listening to the oldies on the radio and learning a TON! I knew nothing about a Goldwing a month ago. This dog loves to learn new tricks! I even got my wife so interested in this whole deal she went out and passed her safety course, got her liscense and bought a bike herself. I am a lucky man!
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Just wax that chrome after getting the bulk of the rust off. Keep it waxed and you shouldn't see any new rust. Oh, I also used Naval Jelly to clean the chrome which is supposed to fill the pits and hold off the rust.

Greetings Polkadot77,
Your wire wheels look to be in rather good shape per the photo's. Are the spokes as clean as they look? Or will you or did you need to remove any rust from them?

Fred, I have not done anything to the wheels yet. They are in pretty good shape. There is some crude on the spokes but no rust. I think some fine steel wool and polish will do the trick. I see you are in Detroit. Maybe when the beast is complete we can get together for a ride. Ernie

Hi Fred,

if your spokes are very rusty, an option is to re-spoke your weels with stainles/inox spokes, the more you cleen them, the harder they shine (and no more rust).

Spent most of the day cleaning, polishing and painting. The project has gone pretty well overall. I am having two small problems. First, is there a trick to getting the seals out of the front forks? I don't want to pry too hard and break anything. Second, I can not seem to get the water pump out of the front cover. Again I do not want to tap too hard and break the alum front cover. Thanks for your help. Ernie

To help you out we'll need to know the year of your bike.

It's a good idea to go into your profile (look at the top of the page just under the Randakk logo) and add that info in your signature.

I worked on the bike most of the weekend. I have been cleaning polishing and painting mostly. Most of the bike parts are ready to be installed and are being stored strategicly under my boat. Image As you may remember I had a really rusty starter clutch and rotor. Got a replacement from psychocycle and installed it Saturday. I had trouble getting it in place on the spindal so I made three "starter clutch assembly tools". They can be seen in the attached photo. Do not be fooled. They may look like pieces of bent wire but much design engineering went into them. Image As you can see the clutch looks much better. I did manage to get the seals out of my front forks. I did not realize that there is a tool known as a seal puller. (this shows my level of mechanical knowledge) I am still fighting the water pump. It seems to be "welded" in the cover. I will keep soaking and tapping. (the force is getting greater) The bike frame has been completely painted. In fact, I began putting components back ON the bike. Image I also installed the new timing belts. Long story short, If the engine is at TDC and both pulleys say up and the arrows point to the marks on the cover (right and left), I am good to go? That seems what everything boiled down to! Image I also got my gas tank back and new tires. I got the Dunlop 404 tires. I think they look good and am told they perform pretty well. Image I'll keep plugging along and will keep you posted. I think I am beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel! Ernie

It is looking nice and shiney. Good work. I guess either you or the next owner will know when the belts were replaced.
