I have used a grease gun. If air pressure won't do it the grease usually will. The nipple on a grease gun fits pretty well on the bleeder screw. And youd be surprised how much pressure you can create doing it that way. You need to block the where the line goes in of course. I usually just leave the line installed until I get the piston out. And of course you'll need to make sure you get all of the grease out when you clean the caliper.
This is all hypthetical of course. For someone who did soak them in something like, say, kroil.
I've had good luck putting them in my ultrasonic cleaner too. You could accomplish about the same with boiling water.

I have always had luck getting them out with the grease gu. BTW, your man cave looks just like Hampsters when I first met him. He lived in an apartment and have like 7 little man caves spread throughout the complex! Got ya covered on the splitter too.

I was looking at Randakk's cite to get info on coating my gas tank. He recommends several, including Por 15. I checked out their cite and they have a cycle cleaning and sealing kit for $40.00. Looks like a great deal, but I was wondering what happens to the screens in the tank? What can I do to prevent their clogging? Maybe compressed air through the petcock holes? What have been your experiences with this or other products. (If I clean the tank well, do I even need to coat it?)
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!
You can use the compressed air. I just took my screens out. They were in pretty bad shape anyway.

polkadot77 wrote:Bottom two lines would be the same right? PO must have had longer line on the bike because he had 77 bars and the extension.
The bottom 2 lines are longer on the 77 than on the 76.
I'm not sure why but I ordered all three lines and recieved 77's instead of 76's.
All 3 lines were longer.
my guess is you got 78-79 lines as the forks were slightly longer and the handlebars higher on these models.

Success tonight! All 4 pistons are out. The two front pistons came out with the grease gun attached. The two in the rear were a bit more stubborn. I put so much pressure on the grease gun that grease started coming out the gun fitting attached to the hose. I put the rear caliper in an old pan and boiled for about a half hour. The grease gun then did its job. I will clean them up later this week. I think I'll order the caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits tomorrow along with a Randakk carb rebuild kit. I believe that this whole process of removing the pistons would be much easier if they are not soaked in something like say, kroil . . . . hypothetically speaking!
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!
Do some checking on the rear caliper kits. There is an o-ring I don'tthenk they come with. It is the one that goes between the two halves. You can get the 0-ring itself from crescent moon.
Good job on the pistons by the way.
And do make sure you get all the grease out.

I decided to tackle the gas tank tonight. I used a hose the other day to get as much rust out of the tank as possible. It was still rusty, but I did not think it was too bad. I put the Mr. Wizard deoxidation contraption to work.
The charger worked like mad for about a half hour, then very little was going on. In the past this meant that my sacrifice piece was coated, so I checked. Here is what I found.
Yuuuuuuuuuck! I have been cleaning the bolts in the solution about every hour. I guess I'll just keep doing it as long as the rust keeps appearing.

Cool and gross at the same time. How many amps does your charger put out?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Are you running the derusting rig indoors? Be careful, that does produce hydrogen as it works. Should be done outside or in a very well ventilated area.

Robin, I am now officially paranoid every time I see one of your posts! I did think about the hydrogen but after a quick search did not think it posed any threat. Anyway, I have since flushed out the tank, and refilled it on an angle so that the part that was empty is now under water. I have also moved the operation to the garage! The tank really looks good inside. Now I will have to decide whether to coat it and if so, what to use. I have time to think about that and do some more research. By the way, that charger is a variable one. It can be set at 10 amps or 2 for trickle charges.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!
Sorry, I'm not really paranoid. I just think about stuff sometimes.

Just got back from a meeting with streetwing78. Two guys talking about bikes for two hours that seemed like 20 minutes. Just a bunch of great guys on this site! He cut me a great deal on a 76 seat, so parts wise I'm getting pretty close. Thanks Tom.

Electrolysis is line of sight. Move the anode to the sending unit hole for a while. It took me 18 hours on the charger to get it clean. I didn't coat it and it still looks like new.
Another tip is to connect a 24" piece of 1/4" or 3/8" copper tubing to a garden hose. Stick a utility knife blade in the end of the tubing and smash the tubing over the blade. It makes a good flexible power washer for the nooks and crannys.
Sometimes paranoia is a good thing. I had two small explosions when I was cleaning my tank. I figured out that the rusty bubbles had soaked the piece of wood I was using as an insulator and there was an arc to the fuel fill hole that ignited the hydrogen. I didn't completely cover the hole after that I tell ya.
