I installed them clean and dry, nothing except a washer under the bolt heads either (despite the great grease debate).

Sorry but it is not a debate. http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7801 Failure to lube the bolts properly result in a head gasket with insufficient clamping pressure that will fail before it should.
Honda manual states to coat the threads and both sides of the washer w/Moly90 before torquing to 42-45 ft/lbs in sequence. WF beat me to the post..was in a rush to go to work and now just got home  Lubing the fasteners DOES make a difference, the Honda moly 90 is an extreme pressure lube (same as what you use on the drive splines) I know it's expensive from the dealer, but 1 tube will last 1 Goldwing a lifetime!

There was an episode of Horsepower TV on Spike channel a while ago that showed the merits and consequences of ARP fasteners and the lube they sell compared to motor oil, grease, and other lubes to lubricate the threads...I think you could find the episode on line...Very interesting!

Ordered a new head gasket.
I have the spline grease.

I don't mind the re-do/$40.

The Clymer manual leaves a lot to be desired, detail-wise.

Thanks for the feedback, all y'all!
