Well Gordo now I understand where all the oil was coming from out of your old GL1100. Thanks for straightening us out because quite frankly, I know a lot of people thought it was because of the lack of a rear case gasket.

I used Jasco stripper on the inside of my initial test case tube. I stripped the for-real one an hour ago. It looks OK.

I'm not sure about the ethanol. I'll have to watch it and see if something weird happens to the plastic. I have the test piece to soak in fuel. If I have to coat the insides I don't have a clue what I'd use. We've been talking about the tubes staying cool and maybe the fuel falling out of suspension. I don't think there will be puddles (evenything is downhill) but they may get wet and stay wet.

Besides picking Robin's brain, I ran all of this past Dr. Bunsen Honeydew of Muppet Labs. He says everything is fine. (Beaker appears to be a little concerned but mostly about the bar tab.)

I said my old 1100F as in CB1100F, even I wouldn't run pod filters on a 'Wing.

The left front tube is done and I started on the left rear tube. While waiting for the glass to harden I built the left assembly jig. I have enough parts now that I could hold the carbs in front so I can get a better idea of what it's actually going to look like.
I understand that I have loose ends all over the place and I have no idea if this is going to work with the stock carbs but...

I do believe it is gonna look really friggin' cool.

I should have the left rear tube finished tomorrow. I'll try to rig something to hold the carbs up so I can get a photo.

Rainstromrider had a 78 laying around doing nothing and I picked it up tonight. It's rough and it looks like HIS PO was a hack - but I do believe I'm on my way.

So far the best thing was the 76 right side triangle engine mount turned upside down, or inside out, or something. The side covers do have all their tabs though.

Those are the right side carbs on the left side so the link points are wrong.
I haven't given the linkage much thought yet. That part is really going to be interesting. I think it's gonna need a cross brace for attachment points for the linkage. All I have on the linkage so far is the thought that I might need a #4 shyhook mounted horizontally.

I can't remember if we talked about it. Will the left side carbs work on the left side? That way the linkage would be to the center. Making it much easier to design the joining linkage.

And I think you need to get it down here once it is running. You won't be able to jet it on a dyno. Close, but with the carbs facing forward it's going to get a lot more air when it's moving. I would be more than happy to help with that part. But we would need some time. ;)

Of course I know it won't be anytime soon. But you are making good progress so far.

I'm certainly having fun with it. I had those 2" v-stacks laying around so I stuck them on (literally). It will need some sort of filter and probably a stone shield to keep the big chunks and the rain out. That will have some limiting effect on the amount of air they are getting. For now, I'm using as much junk as I have laying around as I can.

It only takes a couple of minutes to change the jets on the Webers. The stock carbs almost need a re-work just to get to them.
I suppose we (notice the "we" Rob) can drill out the jets and then solder them up and re-drill them to experiment? Lot of wrench time involved going that way. I'm sure we'll talk about that later.

I am concerned about my choice of the polyester resin (readily available at the Auto Parts store). It's real brittle. I'm going to do a test later with a tube made with epoxy resin and fiberglass. Vibration and really rigid plastic parts generally don't get along very well and I'm concerned about cracking of the joint between the tubes and the aluminum base plates. There is a lot of weight cantilevered off the front. There will be bracing, but I'm not confident about that. (The epoxy appears to take longer to set up. The glassing takes a lot of time and there are 4 layers on each tube.)

The carbs will remain on their correct sides but feed the opposite jug (#1 will feed jug #3 and #3 will feed jug #1). That will make the linkage all inboard. With any luck I can utilize the outboard synchronizer on #4 so I don't have to design and build one for the cross-bike sync. Having it just inboard of the carb will be a plus since it would be tough to get to if it ends up near the centerline of the bike.

My spidey sense thinks the linkage won't be as hard as it seems. Perhaps a lengthening of the shafts joined with an adjuster in the middle, or using a set from a spare carb set would give you the adjuster between already mounted and identical to the other set. Maybe a solid bar running across the back to keep the linkages in alignment. Standard UJM 4 bank design.
