As for the carb problem, I'd pursue Old Fogey's suggestion. Remove the floats and fuel valves and plug them as well as the fuel inlet and draw a vacuum and see if the gasket that seals the two halfs of the plenum together is leaking. If so, I'd do a complete overhaul on the carbs.

First I need to fix the scavenger pump issues. Are there any tutorials on how to do it?

i tried to loosen the bottom bolt by applying heat, unfortunately without result. i think i'll just leave the bolt as is, perhaps shorten in to just fit in the frame and apply a nut to it.

i think i found the solution to the clutch issues also, i opened the scavenger pump today, and the rotor in there is broken in many pieces.

should i check the front pump to be sure?

Hey, that can be repaired with a bit of JBWeld lol. Good thing you found that, must have been something metal got loose to cause that damage.

From what, the rotor parts.?
They are very smal, no damage to the engine

Probably want to flush the inside of that case with diesel, there are likely small metal shavings all over.
I found the end of the internet

i agree with that.

what is the best procedure to flush? the engine is out of the frame, so cannot run

carb issues

#41

Post by ronajon »

last weekend i finally had some time (and good weather) to make progress with the bike.
replaced the broken rotor, replaced the damper plate with 2 friction plates, got the engine back in the frame, reconnected all wiring and got some GL1100 carbs on her. (plugged the vacuum advance)
checked points gap and timing, and synced carbs

now with the gl1100 carbs in place the bike runs nice. but not great

when running the bike above 3000 rpm, on closing the throttle she does not deaccelerate direct, but keeps on 3000 rpm and then slowly starts lowering in rpm
also throttle response is not great, from idle to accelerate, it takes a fraction of time before she will take off

i read about air cutoff valve which can be faulty, so i'm going to check those.
any more suggestions which need to be checked?

Sounds more like a carb sync is in order. Bad air cut off valves will usually cause backfiring on decel. Not a hanging idle.

i just did the carb sync.
if it's not air cutoff valve, can it be there is an air leak?

I'd be thinking air leak.

Ronajon, Love the tracker style... I am kinda doing the same!

I have learned a couple things from this forum...
1. These old Goldwings sure will make a mechanic out of us!!!
2. You guys know ALOT more about how these things work than I do!!!
1978 GL1000 Purchased April 10th, 2013
Removed fairing, added new tubes and tires, Dirt bike handlebars, new grips, cut down stock seat, trimmed stock fender, new fuel lines, fuel filter, oil and filter change, valve adjust, new fork oil, final gear drive flushed and did Lazy Mans carb clean...
