Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
To put in another 2 cents worth here, Just had my GL1000 Frame, Main stand, Battery Box, False tank shelter, Heat Shield (behind the radiator), Fan Shroud and the Swinging Arm all done for £140.00 or about $214. This included getting the rear fender blasted for chroming.
All the items were first blasted to prep for the PC, I asked a for a slightly thinker coating too. You can see the items that were done on my build thread... Search on Yet Another My build GL1000

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
I've come to a decision on which way to go with the frame.. I will either have it powder coated or not.
Okay, fine. It will be decided by which engine I find first. ..Actually a LOT will be decided by which engine I find. If I find a serviceable 1000, I will touch up the original paint and continue my super low-budget build. However, if I find a 1200...
This project will take a left turn. PC the frame, 1200cc, 1000 heads, dual Webers, who knows what else.
Now if I can just locate a good condition engine within 100 miles..

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
I'm on a bit of a budget build with my '77. When I had the frame bare, I put a wire brush on the old grinder and got all the rust off. Where there was still pitting, I applied a little POR-15. After that, a little masking then some rattle can truck bed liner paint.
Like you, I'd like to ride the bike and not worry about scratching it, and in the places where I have marred the bed liner, I just spray a little more on and it looks A-OK.

I believe the guys in Athens Alabama are around $250.00 just for the frame.
Not sure if they will let you throw in any extras.
But the pricing also goes by the color.
So your basic gloss black will be cheaper than say doing a candy which is two stage.
Let me know how you are doing we can always get together one weekend.

Was the bike wrecked?
He only says it was a running bike.

I have no idea. I thought about calling him, but at this time I don't need a motor. And, I don't want to jinx the good motor I have by buying a new one. I know, it doesn't work like that, but it is my excuse to save $200....

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
The price is right on that one! But it's almost 600 miles from me.
Dangit. The gas and hotel stay make that no longer a great price.
I'm not certain, but isn't the 84 the 1200 with the timing pickup in the back? That would require frame mods, which I'm not prepared to do. Somewhere I was reading a post about putting a 1200 in a 1000 frame, but I can't remember how I found it.
Chris, did you still have the local guy with the 1100?
I've ordered the rubber bits for my forks though, and will have a front end rebuilding update soon.

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
He keeps using these cheap solenoids from China and they keep blowing.
But last time I spoke to him he is back tracking now.
They put a new starter on it and found out it had hydro locked and that is why the starter got messed up.
He was very lucky he didn't bend every valve in the bike. Luckily when it happened it didn't have far to travel.
the bike is running right now so he is happy and riding.

Now I do still have my mechanic that has a GL1000 and he may still part with the engine he is trying to decide what he wants to do with it.

I have a 79 Wing in Douglasville, GA, 20 miles west of Atlanta that I will give you if you come and get it. It appears to have a good engine and carbs. It's a roller but missing the headlight, seat, front fender, mufflers and some small parts. It will come with a Georgia bill of sale (same thing about titles as Alabama). Hopefully enough to get your projcet on the road. I have way too many projects at the moment and need the garage space more then I need another bike.

Now how could I argue with that? Now I just need to figure out how to let the wife know I'm headed to Atlanta. Expect a PM soon

Re: "Bad Idea" low budget build
Update: I HAVE AN ENGINE!!
Well I couldn't have asked for a smoother transaction than that. To 555, the highest of fives to you, good sir!
He and his buddy even loaded it on the trailer for me! If anybody has any question about buying/selling/trading parts with him, do not hesitate! This guy is the real deal, knows his stuff, and is eager to help you out. (the kind of guy you wish was your neighbor)
So now I should have all the parts I need to make a complete bike. The engine seems complete, nothing is frozen up. I will go thru it in detail soon, but for now I have just unloaded it into the garage.
So for those of you that were hoping this was going to turn into a radical, modded-up motor build thread - sorry. I'm going to continue on the low-budget theme. I'm still working on forks, because I haven't received my rubber bits for it yet. I'll have another decision to make with those as well.. the upper tubes are easy, i'll use the best ones. The lowers are a different story. All three sets are pretty "aged" looking (aren't we all?) but the newest set has a bunch of weathered military vehicle registration stickers on the left tube. Kind of a neat look. I'm not going to polish them to a chromey shine, but there will certainly be a degree of clean-up performed for any of them.
Total cost so far: $380
